Post subject:  (yet another "non-metal genre" thread) The Pop Thr

It's the scourge of the metal community, and if we expressed our fandom for it to the "tr00 metahl!!!1111" crowd, we'd probably be subject to non-stop ridicule. Yet, I'm sure most of us can name at least a few pop songs or pop bands that we enjoy. So, without further ado, here's the "Pop" thread (don't worry, we won't pick on you for your personal choices - I have a metalhead friend who actually admits to liking a freaking Backstreet Boys song!).

You all know that I'm a big Garbage fan, since I sometimes post their music in the "Favorite song of the moment" thread. But I've also recently taken a bit of a liking to the semi-popular mid-90's funk-pop band Luscious Jackson, partially because I remember frequently hearing Naked Eye (video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIAAx2vAxic) on the radio back in Junior High and find it to be a pretty catchy pop/hip-hop tune. I also enjoy bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Weezer if alterno-pop really classifies as "pop."

XTC are divine and so are The Beatles. I love The Kinks, The Beach Boys, Elliott Smith, Colin Blunstone, The Cardigans, Kevin Ayers, quite a lot of French pop... Yeah, pop's da bomb...When you're in the right mood for it.

You know? I just never really got that into The Beatles for some reason. I have nothing but respect for them and recognize that they probably broke down more musical barriers than any other rock band in history, but I just could never really get into them the way I could get into rockers like Elvis Presley and (my favorite of the REALLY old school) Chuck Berry. I, too, like The Beach Boys btw. With Good Vibrations being probably my favorite of their songs.

Anyway, I guess I should mention that I was thinking more of plain-old pop than pop-rock with this thread. Otherwise, I would've added bands like Queen, Billy Joel, and The Smashing Pumpkins to my list (and come to think of it, perhaps Garbage shouldn't even be on there since they're more of a pop/alternative hybrid than a full-blown pop band, especially on their first album). But nonetheless, we could discuss both pop-pop and pop-rock if you'd like.

Jewel, The Fountains Of Wayne, The Go-Go's, The B-52's, and yes, stuff like Britney Spears and J-Lo if you like them (or at least one or two of their songs), etc.

Basically, that sort of thing. Jewel, The Fountains Of Wayne, etc.

Then, this thread is not for me, Fail... I'm only interested in Pop if has some Rock involved (As Garbage or The Beatles).

Just a note: I edited my last post after you wrote this. But pop with a bit of rock could also be mentioned here. Garbage, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, etc. All are appropriate examples. So may be I should've made this topic a little broader: The Pop Thread. Discuss pop, with or without a little rock mixed in.

My main problem with Britney Spears' music is that, quite frankly, she can't sing. At least J-Lo and Aguilera have decent singing voices. Even if their actual music is questionable at best.

For me "Pop" is the sound the Beach Boys and The Beatles had...

I guess I just think of it as a general term for very clean, catchy and vocal-centered music.

Pretty much. Like indie, it's an umbrella term that shifts over time.

I don't even know why you're posting in a thread that's dedicated to pop music. Go start a "I like bad thrash" thread and leave the other discuss the merits of pop music, bitch.
