I just downloaded Sviatoslav Richter's 13 disc Completel EMI Recordings and have been slowly absorbing it. He's so good. Schumman's Piano Concerto in A-Minor is insanely beautiful.

Youtube is awesome for classical music. All I have by Brahms is two of his symphonies and they both make me feel like I'm in a faery kingdom of unending happiness, which is pretty cool.

You guys not checked out the BBC Proms at all? I love the Proms, it's great for discovering random composers and pieces of music as they cover a huge spectrum of eras.

I really recommend Prom 39 with that dude from Radiohead's piece "Popcorn Superhet Reciever". The bit where they go all percussive is amazing!

I listen to the local classical radio station a lot. My favorite piece is probably the Four Seasons by Vivaldi.

I was listening to Hector Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique today and I think my favourite part of classical music is how a melody will only play in full once in an entire piece, but it still gets driven into my brain just from that one time.

I grew up listening to classical music almost exclusively as a young child. My list of favorite composers is quite lengthy and mostly those you probably already know. There are current performers who I find to be brilliant. A few of my favorite opera singers would be Renee Fleming, Cecilia Bartoli, Anna Netrebko and Ruth Ann Swenson. Violinists- Sarah Chang and Janine Jansen. Cello- of course YoYo-Ma and Akiko Suwanai. Let's see, I could listen to Chopin's Preludes and Nocturnes all day. There's a recent pianist I like named Simone Dinnerstein. Anything written by Couperin. I've even found myself enjoying 'crossover' vocalists like Sarah Brightman, Emma Shapplin, Katherine Jenkins, Giorgia Fumanti, and similar others. Oh, Baroque rocks. :wink:

Dunno if this is "classical" in the traditional sense, but I can enjoy me some Yann Tierson...the soundtrack from Amelie is amazing. But I'd really like to get into more classical, any recommendations for a beginner? I really have almost nothing in the way of pure classical, so shoot away.

From what I've heard of these this list is a good place to start. The Planets, The Rite of Spring, Pictures at the Exhibition, Beethoven's 5th, Schumann's 4th and Symphonie Fantastique have all been things I liked right away, anyways.

In SMW that's the music that the kinda have when you're fighting Bowser, but you're right on that point too lol.

Dunno too much about classical music, but hells I dig Arvo Part. I've dug this music for ages but it's only when I did a youtube search did I realise that it was on the soundtrack to There Will Be Blood.

You want some Avant Garde classical, check out Edgard Varèse. This is one of Stephen Forte's (Adagio) biggest influences.

Saw The Planets tonight. Mars, Saturn and Uranus blew my mind. Also played a Stravinsky piece that was less good but still had some tingles going on at the climax of the first movement.
