So I've been listening nonstop to What's The Story, Morning Glory? by Oasis, and since I'm relatively new to the genre, I was wondering if some of the brits here could give me some good advice on bands and albums to start with for the rest of the genre. The conservatory here, for some odd reason, has a sizable collection of Oasis, Blur and Manic Street Preachers CDs. Where to start? |

You might wanna check Mansun, a more progressive britpop. Try "Six". Also, Suede isn't bad at all, "Dog Man Star" is their best IMO. Worth checking. |

Lol for Val. OK, I'm just going to do a list of bands you should check out that all loosely fit under 'Britpop'. Some aren't British, a couple aren't Pop, but it's all stuff you might like. I don't like all of it myself, be warned. Placebo, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Morrissey, The Fratellis, Muse, Charlotte Hatherley, Kaiser Chiefs, Stone Roses, My Bloody Valentine, The Crimea, The Decemberists, The Fall, Stereophonics, Interpol, Kasabian, MGMT, Happy Mondays, Radiohead (durr), The Divine Comedy, Supergrass, Secret Machines, and I suppose Therapy? count. Definitely check U2 and R.E.M. out, as well. Rio's going to come along and say LOL NO to half of these, but check them out anyways. Someone tell me if Ride are any good, btw. |

Haha, oh man I never thought I'd see a thread like this... Blur are the best britpop band, but their later stuff gets experimental and hit and miss. (IMO) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM8agr7_TxE As for Goat's list; sure- I associate britpop with the years when I was a lad (mid to late 90s), which a lot of those bands don't fit into. There are great bands on it though (and some shockers but let's leave that.... Stereo-fucking-phonics?? zzzzzzzzz). The Stone Roses' debut self titled is an incredible record that literally everybody should own and listen to; one of the greatest pop records ever. But it is more Madchester than britpop. L&index=16 Skunk Anansie- Much more metallic than the other bands here, but one of my favourite groups of all time, still. They were also a cool right-on ranting anti-racist band. Not an expert... But Blur, Placebo, Supergrass & Suede are all good sugestions in this field. And not exactly Britpop, but very related, Gorillaz deserves a try. I can't stand Oasis... I think the hooligan factor has a lot to do with it. |

You should definitely check out some of the more 'regular' shoegaze, which is pretty much the precursor to britpop. Ride - Nowhere Chapterhouse - Pearl EP Slowdive - Souvlaki Catherine Wheel - Ferment They're all great albums, at least for me. |

Therapy? and Skunk Anansie are not Brit pop. Skunk Anansie have some mellow tunes, sure, but I still wouldn't call them Brit pop. But I probably have no idea what Brit pop is anyway. And Therapy?...definitely not (see previous sentence). Both awesome bands, though. How about The Coral. Brilliant band. DREAMING OF YOU BILL MCCAI SOMETHING INSIDE OF ME Hundred Reasons, maybe? They're probably too indie rock, though. Again, great band. I'LL FIND YOU IF I COULD FALTER

Therapy? definitely not. Skunk not really either, but it's nice to take every opportunity to namedrop them. I really think of Britpop as a scene rather than a style of music. It's those bands that coalesced around Blur and Oasis during the mid-90s. So whilst someone like The Coral would fit alongside that musically, they turned up after the party was over, I guess. |
