Post subject:  Addictive Music
What's the last album you were really addicted to? That you just couldn't stop listening to?

I'd have to say mine was probably Between The Buried And Me's Colors. I listened to that album 3 times the first day I bought it and I proceeded to listen to it almost nonstop for another couple weeks.

I haven't had one of those albums in a long time. The last one I can think of was a few years back when I made the transition from Shout at the Devil on tape to CD. That CD never left my walkman. But recently I just can't think of anything.

Cancer Bats - Hail Destroyer

I remember checking the playcounts on my ipod for it after about 2 weeks after I first heard it, and the lowest played song was around 40 something plays, the highest in the 80's.

Faraquet "A View From This Tower"
I've been addicted to this one since I first heard it a few years ago. First I downloaded and burnt it, then bought it and, because it got damaged, bought it again. Whenever I play it, I spin it at least twice in a row. Great CD!

Stiletto Formal - Fiesta Fiesta Fiesta Fiesta was the last one that tempted me to break my "one listen per album a day" rule. it sucks how that always leads to being sick of it for a month or two :(

how often do you guys discover albums like this? for me it's usually about every 3-6 months

Either Pink Floyd's The Wall or The Final Cut.

I can't think of a metal album spun as much as those two. Neurosis' Through Silver In Blood comes close, I suppose.

Not as much as I'd like to. I love an album that I just can't stop listening to.

Another question I had in mind was about how you would numerically score addictive albums. Numerical scores themselves are flawed, because they tend to portray that everything rated 4.5 stars and above (just the use the RYM rating system as an example) is the only stuff worth listening to and everything else is garbage, but some of the most addictive and enjoyable music I've heard gets rated 4.0 or 3.5 or something. I remember not being able to stop listening to Follow The Reaper because it was just so damn good, but I wouldn't rate it anything higher than a 4. Also, a couple of the albums I've rated as straight 5's I find myself unable to listen to on a regular basis. The addictive quality is definately something good in music; as far as I know, we all like finding an album we can't stop listening to, but it's not something that all good music has... to me, at least.

Attempting to listen to a variety of music prevents me from doing this. I wish I could find more albums like this. Maybe Akercocke 'Goat of Mendes' would be the last one I repeatedly listened to for a while.

Very true! I was just thinking about this earlier today and was going to write something like this in response to this thread. Specifically, I was thinking that there are a lot of albums on RYM that might have overall ratings of around 3 but are still very much worth listening to; the band i was thinkiing of was The Fall of Troy. These kinds of albums are not really 5-star quality stuff but are really really good regardless. Maybe we should be rating them 5-stars, since they're really just as fun to listen to as "brilliant" music like GY!BE, which I don't listen to on a regular basis. Follow the Reaper is a great example...I think the bottom line is, there is a lot of stuff that is just ridiculously catchy and fun to listen to, but is not exactly the height of musical achievement and thus doesn't equate in our minds with something deserving of a 5-star rating.

Circus Maximus - Isolate was probably the last one. I generally get one or two of them a year, and while there were a lot of good albums I picked up in the past year, none of them were really addictive like Isolate was. I've listened to it all the way through close to 100 times probably...

Indeed. It's good to note that just because something doesn't have an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 doesn't mean it's not worth listening to. The Fall Of Troy is a great example. Doppelganger might not be the utlimate musical experience, but it's still a great album that's definately worth checking out. Some of my most well enjoyed music I've only given a 3.5 or 3.0 or so.

Lately it has been Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe. Completely perfect and goes with any mood or situation.

Before that it was probably PtH - Kezia and BTBAM - Colors. Maybe Dir en Grey - Vulgar.
