Off the top of my head and with the aid of itunes: Rotten Sound - Colonies Cancer Bats - Smiling Politely Cancer Bats - Lucifer's Rocking Chair Opeth - Heir Apparent Sigur Ros - Gobbledigook Origin - The Aftermath Meshuggah - Bleed Meshuggah - Dancers To A Discordant System Johnny Truant - Last Arms Of The Apocalypse Johnny Truant - The Grotesque Envy - Life Caught In The Rain In Flames - Sleepless Again The Fall Of Troy - Chapter IV: Enter The Black Demon Dir en grey - Vinushka Dir en grey - Glass Skin Dir en grey - Bugaboo Bring Me The Horizon - Sleep With One Eye Open Coldplay - Violet Hill Black Francis - When They Come To Murder Me The Berzerker - An Unforgotten Force Aborted - A Murmer In Decrepit Wits Paramore - Decode Underoath - Breathing In A New Mentality Underoath - Anyone Can Dig A Whole But It Takes a Real Man To Call It Home a few of these were on albums that weren't on my overall best list because I didn't feel that as a full album they were that good, but some individual songs were fantastic. |

Very good songs indeed. A few others that I come to think of right now are: Ayreon - Age of Shadows Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal Bloodbath - Weak Aside Gojira - Yama's Messengers Equilibrium - Mana The Monolith Deathcult - I Spew Thee Out of My Mouth Pin-up Went Down - Cadavre exquis The Mars Volta - Soothsayer Ásmegin - Prunkende, Stolt I Jokumsol. Probably my favorite of the year. I was playing GTA IV the first time I heard it, smashing shit up, killing people, the usual stuff. But I just had to stop when I heard this song. I put the controller down and closed my eyes. It's so charming and beautiful.

Protest The Hero - Sequoia Throne . There are many others but this is my definite fave. I probably didn't go 24 hours without listening to it at least once. Origin - The Aftermath deserves a mention here for being the craziest song that put me off my guitar. How do the play those sweeps? fuck how did I forget The Mars Volta - Goliath. Best breakdown ever. |

Seventh Avenue - Terium Seventh Avenue - Future's Dawn Seventh Avenue - Two Masters really, I could put down almost all the songs off of Terium... but I won't Seventh Wonder - Break The Silence Seventh Wonder - The Black Parade Protest The Hero - Palms Read Protest The Hero - Sequoia Throne Royal Hunt - Divide and Reign Evergrey - Fear Suspyre - Siren (probably my favorite track of the year) Opeth - Heir Apparent DragonForce - Heroes of Our Time Grand Magus - Silver Into Steel Communic - Stone Carved Eyes Serenity - Derelict Meshuggah - Combustion |

Thrice - Daedelus; the change in mood during the second verse is amazing. i don't know how they do it and i don't really want to know. Thrice - A Song for Milly Michaelson; can't listen to this without crying. Colour Haze - Turns; perfect song. i've always thought backwards guitars were really pretty, but never really heard them used as anything other than a neat little intro or outro or gimmick. Stefan Koglek proves that they're fucking gorgeous. The Mars Volta - Agadez; perfect song. The Mars Volta - Wax Simulacra; usually it takes them like 10 minutes to trigger this much emotion but they can do it in 3 too. Paramore - Decode; last chorus = holy fuck. Protest the Hero - Bloodmeat; pretty much everything about Bloodmeat is perfect Protest the Hero - Bone Marrow; THE ROYALTY MUST DIE LIKE COMMON BEGGARS AND PETTY THIEVES = shit. Trivium - Between ... can't spell the names Trivium - Shogun; chorus lyrics are so win Hammers of Misfortune - Fields pt2 Hammers of Misfortune - Butchertown; the vocals on these two songs are unreal. so beautiful. Canvas Solaris - the first one on Atomized Dream; PRETTY GUITARS. i wish they'd write more than one non-metal song per album. The Stiletto Formal - 6pm Your Time; inspired to me to write a love poem including the line "girl, you and i are nothing special" Day Without Dawn - The Undertide; gets really great during the second half Jacob Bannon - The Blood of Thine Enemies; why does he have to taunt us with this teaser and not release the full album like he said he would? what the fuck Jake. Exotic Animal Petting Zoo - Arendering; listened to this once a day for like a month. over and over again and i'm still not tired of it. Triclops! - Love Song for a Botfly; whoever thought they could make a song about a parasitic fly so umm... poetic and meaningful? also informative. lots of sciency words in this one. |
