This one gets better with each listen. I like their early albums as much as the next person, but this one is severely underrated and far more original (less Burzum influenced) than their early works.

I was listening to it yesterday on the way to work and either wasn't in a mood for it, or just couldn't get into it. I'm going to retry some time very soon. I think the twins of "The Swan Road" and "Blood In Our Wells" were two stellar recordings. But, yes, I agree Miscrocosmos is more original than anything else released, previously, to those particular albums.

It is a grower for certain. I was shocked the first time I heard it.

Nile - What Should Not Be Unearthed
Motorhead - Bad Magic
Rotting Christ - Lucifer Over Athens
In Flames - Lunar Strain

**On the new Nile**: On first listen, it sounds quite generic and unenthusiastic from the DM legends. I'm very disappointed to say the least... And the production is nothing to write home about it. Really, I don't know why you thought the production is so good, Thrash...?

I was expecting something a little more thin with much less bottom end right along the lines of their last record. Such is not the case with the new release. Unearthed sounds bold and crushingly heavy across the board with the guitars still sounding crisp enough to easily discern what Karl and Dallas are playing. It just feels like they've finally found a good mix between the distorted heaviness of old and the new cleaner sound. My opinion, of course.

Basically agreed. A step above their disappointing last album.

Out of the discount bin of a record store while out and about today. $11 for the three albums was too good an opportunity to pass.

Ahab - Call of the Wretched Sea, Boats of the Glen Carrig
My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers, Turn Loose the Swans
Type O Negative - Life is Killing Me (Repurchase), Slow, Deep and Hard

My doom collection is sadly pretty thin right now, so I'm going to get to work on that. Any recommendations, fellow metallers?

Off to a nice start, to say the least. I think Trapt is the Type O expert on the forum, but as to MDB, if you enjoy As the Flower Withers and Turn Loose the Swans, I'd get Trinity (their collection of old eps, 90% death vocals), then Dreadful Hours/A Light at the End of the World, finally the new release if you are on board through all of that. Barghest O Whitby is out of print currently, but if you have 27 minutes to enjoy the fuck (yeah you have to stay to the end, best part) out of one great doom/death track, listen here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJQYCk6NRg0

Some of their lighter albums (not that Songs of Darkness or Map of All Your Failures are always all that light) are definitely worth a listen if you get all the way on board with the clean vocals. Then again if you completely love Flower Withers and Turn Loose the Swans while enjoying the style change, go straight to their next album, Angel and the Dark River, their best (and only good) completely clean vocal album.

It depends what you want from your doom really. I could rattle off a few, mostly it'd be more or less well known stuff, but I'm sort of reluctant lest I appear the fool for recommending something you already know well. TON's Bloody Kisses is well worth snaring if you dig Slow, Deep, & Hard. It's kind of hard to go wrong with TON as even their lighter records (Life Is Killing Me for example) feature enjoyable tracks. Running with the vagueness in your post I'll throw out half a dozen personal favourites as well

Anathema - The Silent Enigma (Doom/Death)
Thergothen Streams From The Heavens (Funeral Doom)
Unholy - The Second Ring Of Power (black/doom/proto-funeral doom I'm not really sure which to this day)
Cathedral - Forest Of Equilibrium (Doom/Death)
Trouble - Psalm 9 *Traditional Doom)
Thorr's Hammer - Dommedagsnatt EP (Doom/Death)

Honourable mentions to Solitude Aeturnus - Through The Darkest Hour (Traditional Doom) and Morgion - Cloaked By Ages, Crowned In Earth (Doom/Death)

Nice rec on Cathedral's first album, RO. Forest of Equilibrium is timeless.

Though I'd caution Unholy (great as they were) as an early band for the doom dive in experience.

Yeah, Type O Negative is always great. October Rust is probably their best album, with Bloody Kisses being solid as well, and Life is Killing Me ends up being my favorite more often than not because of how catchy it is.

Other doom recommendations based on what I assume you would dig:
Candlemass - Death Magic Doom
Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction, Foundations of Burden
Reverend Bizarre - So Long Suckers
My Dying Bride - Dreadful Hours
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

Resisting suggesting Thou, Spiritus Mortis, Om, Dolorian, Noothgrush, some of my personal favorites. I feel like I don't tow the doom metal puritanism line enough. Like I don't even recognize RO's suggestions. Like, yeah, Trouble is Trouble, but not sure I've ever listened to the whole album.
