I've decided to buy a couple of rekkerds to see if I like how they sound in comparison to digital formats (I've heard from pretty much everyone who's tried it that the "vinyl experience" of listening to it is much better than for CDs)... just wondering if anyone else here likes vinyl or has any thoughts on it or whatever.

Vinyls are huuuuuuuge. And I can't put them on my computer. And I don't even have a record player.

I'll stick with CDs.

A friend of mine started a collection up recently since he got a record player. I admit there was something different about the whole thing, we sat in his house blasting Venom and Boney M records and it was alot of fun, but it would have been fun if they were CDs anyways. As much as I'd actually like to collect though, Im really much happier with just collecting CDs.

I recorded several vinyl records and A/B'ed them to the CD's and there was not too much noteable difference.

Let's leave it at this.

Some people prefer vinyl
Some people prefer CD's

CD's are technologically superior. They have a higher sample rate and can reproduce very high to extremely high frequencies with impeccable accuracy.

Vinyl is uncompressed but can not reproduce as many frequencies due to the physical limitations of the waveforms present on a vinyl disc.

The shortcomings of CD's are made up for by algorithyms present in sound cards and pre-amps in receivers and amplifiers.

The shortcomings in vinyl are made up for with equalizers and tone controls

Both formats rely on the technically ability of the mixing and mastering engineers involved with their production.

Both have to utilize various techniques to fit on their respective formats and sound good. Some vinyl masters are better than Cd masters and vice versa.

A well mastered CD will always sound better than the best mastered Vinyl with the proper equipment to play them.

Cold and Hard is the product of increased fidelity
Warm and Soft are the products of compression.

Both have unique tonal characteristics that the other does not have. Neither is perfect however. CD's are closer to perfection when they are mastered correctly because they give a more accurate depiction of the actual recording.

I think vinyls are cool, especially if it's collectors item material.

I'm a bit cynical at how labels are so quick to release specially limited vinyl albums that they can charge people more for these days. Vinyls only seem worth the amount they are to serious collectors.

I prefer cds. You can get the warmth of a band like Witchcraft coming through perfectly well, plus cds last longer and are easier to store. Don't vinyls decompose the more you play them? I wouldn't mind one or two framed, perhaps, but not for general music use.

CDs vs vinyl

yeah I read about this stuff on another forum, although it seemed like the majority of people who had actually compared vinyl vs CD, the majority preferred vinyl (even if it's theoretically possible to get a much better sound on CD).

And yeah, vinyl's get worn the more you play them (scratching metal along plastic FTW), but somebody told me that buying vinyl then downloading the album = win, and I can't really argue with that :P

I don't know. That depends, going to the thrift store and loading up on dollar a piece vinyl then downloading the album doesn't seem too productive.

I have lots of old metal vinyls at home, still listen them from time to time but I find their sound poorer than on cd's or mp3; must be because old record player (the needle was never changed and its old about 25 - 30 years)

More likely the cartridge. A cartridge is like a casssette tape. It loses oxidation the older it gets and the more it gets used.

Imagine it this way. what is harder a diamond or a record surface? you won't wear a fucking diamond out or a hard metal needles. The needle business is a damn rip off. The cartridge is always the cause for bad sound quality.

Sometimes peple break needles or wear them down by abusing their equipment, but there is no reason to replace needles with regular use.

I routinely by second hand vinyls, mainly because they're incredibly cheap. To be honest, I don't hear the huge sound difference that everybody's talking about- but hey, I got Heathen's Breaking the Silence for three bucks, so who cares?

I don't think the difference is huge... but for me it's noticeable and I like vinyl's sound more from what I've heard.

If you can hear the difference, you're listening too hard.

By the way, I just saw that they make record players that hook up to your PC via USB cable and it's rip the tracks into MP3 format. Fucking awesome! I continue buying vinyl while not having owned a record player in at least a decade. Haha.

Wow, that's even cool! Now you can listen to your Mp3's in vinyl quality even if the vinyl's worn out. I like!!
