Instrumental section wise, imo: Dream Theater are one of the more dull non-post rock/non-jazz bands. On the flipside King Crimson are far and away the best (their composed stuff, not their improvised stuff) at instrumentals... especially when Adrian Belew has been in the band because the way him and Fripp arrange their guitar parts is omgawesome (get The Power To Believe for quite a few examples of this). Other bands with awesome instrumental sections are Behold... The Arctopus, Trephine, Tool, Indukti, Psyopus and Zero Hour. I guess the main thing that seperates them from instrumental sections I don't like is that they're based more around complex riffs or rhythms rather than actual soloing, which I think is boring as hell.

You are listening to Dream Theater aren't you? They don't focus their instrumental breaks around riffs and rythms? Are frikin deaf dude? And why don't you like power metal again?

Meh, I guess I don't really know exactly when I like then, I just know that Dream Theater's breaks really drag for me and make me lose interest in the song... like "Pull Me Under is a really cool song and I probably think that because it doesn't fly off track for 5 minutes.

I like some power metal (Kamelot, Kiuas, Nevermore, Helloween) and I remember hearing a few other bands but not being super interested.

The instrumental break in Take the Time is one of my favourites ever. I vote that noodles is wrong... again!

START BEING RIGHT MORE OFTEN, NOODLES.

Yes! Especially the version on Once in a Livetime.

I must have heard this album several dozen times. Awesome!

I don't understand what you write about DT lacking complex riffing and stuff. I only say Ytse Jam, Dance of Eternity, Learning to Live,...
However, I'm not going to proselytise. To each his own.

well i was going to edit, but you guys have replied a bunch so meh

anyways I'm listening to metropolis pt1 and it's a really cool song. and it's instrumental break is really cool... but I guess what I don't like about it is that they don't click together... like if they were 2 different songs they'd both be good, but together they just don't work for me.

I used to be the biggest DT fan, but the last album I liked was Metropolis Pt. 2. In the beginning, even as progressive and crazy as they were musically, the songs were still strong and memorable. As much as I admired the insane musianship, they rarely forgot about the song itself. Images and Words is full of great technical stuff AND great songs. Nowadays, it seems to me that DT has become Liquid Tension Experiment with vocals. It's almost as if James LaBrie is just showing up for a paycheck anyway because he doesn't even sound like he really cares about the vocals anymore, when they do manage to find their way into the music. He doesn't seem very "into it" live anymore either from what I've seen.

A band I once held in the highest regard has become one of my biggest disappointments

I've always liked DT's instrumentals BECAUSE they are mostly complex riffing and rhythm's, with some insane solos thrown in. I've always thought that Endless Sacrifice has one of the best instrumental breaks ever, but most people don't like Train of Thought as much as I do...

Dance of Eternity definitely slays...one of their best instrumentals, along with Erotomania and Stream of Conciousness...and Overture 1928...and a few others.

I'm watching their latest DVD right now. It gives me chills watching it. They are so damn amazing.

Octavarium has grown on me a lot over the past few months as well.
