I'd say the drummer. He is the one who sets the tempo of the song and is able to turn a shitty song into a great one. Frankly, everyone depends on the drummer.

Hmmmm ... I'll have to sorta go ahead and disagree with you there...

Drums are the foundation and basis of every song (at least rock) and without decent drums the song will crash. Agreed on that part. But is this what IMPORTANCE means? If you think importance means what keeps things from falling apart, then its drums.

But to me, importance is what make things take off and go to another level. Take a look at the Eiffel Tower, without its foundation it would fall apart, but is the foundation what makes it such a beautiful landmark? No, it's the creative, beautiful and unique design it has.

And that's where true importance lies : MELODY. Everytime when someone asks you : "Hey, how does that Maiden song goes again?" ... do you mumble the melody or do you make "tum tum ta tum ts ts tum ta" drum sounds?

In metal, I think what defines the song, what gives the songs it's own identity, is guitar riffs, then the vocal lines. Of course there are exceptions where the drumming is so great to the point it makes the song instantly recognizable even you hear just the drums. Like Painkiller intro, or Raining Blood.

Hmm....

Well I do agree with you on the part where the guitarist and the vocalist bring out the creative part of the bands quality. No denying that. But I also feel the drummer's creativity and stability is important. What I meant was on the band's tightness. The band can only be tight if the drummer is tight. I mean, yeah...some other member could lose timing etc but he'll definitely get back to the rhythm by following the drummer.

And maybe you didnt realize, but whenever a band or any band play live....they always look at the drummer when starting the song or in between it. Haha. If there's one person who decides to screw up his band members on stage....I think it's the drummer. Just play something off-beat and everything goes haywire. LOL!

I think you can't really compare rhythm section to lead section in terms of importance because they're both doing totally different things. It's like when people are like "omg but a guitarist can just pick up a bass and play really well" - of course he can play the notes fast enough, but can he play in time without fail?

If you have a good rhythm section and a bad guitarist/singer, your songs will be boring, if you have a bad rhythm section and a good guitarist/singer, your songs will fall apart.

Meh, this discussion is going nowhere since we give the word "importance" different meanings.
