Metal is probably the music with the least borders though. You wouldn't hear a Polish pop singer who sold millions or some crappy soft rock band who sells as much, but when it comes to metal everyone knows Behemoth.
that applies to basically any kind of non-mainstream music :P blame the internets

mogwai and aereogramme are from scotland :dio:

but yeah they aren't metal

I generally don't go to local metal shows, because most bands here are cookie cutter death metal, which I do not enjoy. I'm not going to support a band just because they're Canadian or from Montreal- the wrongness of this attitude is shown by the amount of people from here who support Celine Dion in some way or other, just because she's from Montreal... eww. But, if I find a good band from the area, I'll be happy, because they'll play many local shows.

I am very proud of the few great swiss bands (Samael, Celtic Frost, Gotthard, etc), but don't listen exclusively to them. Of course, if I'm told of a new swiss band I will check it out, because to some extent it's almost a quality guarantee.
Regarding EU opposed to US, I am a staunch supporter of euro metal in favour of us metal.

The US has some of the best bands ever, wich IMO is one of the 3 best scenes along with the UK and Germany.

I just prefer european metal to american metal. Most of the bands I listen to are european, and my fave genres, power and folk metal, are almost exclusively euro.

Yes, forgot about coroner.

I don't give a shit if a band is American, but I admit I am biased if they're from New Jersey. But that has paid off - I listened to Whiplash and Deadly Blessing for the first time just because they're from NJ. Right thing for the wrong reasons?

I like our local ska scene more than our local metal scene. I have friends in both so I support them because of that, but I definitely don't show up to shitty bands' shows.

And since a bunch of other guys are doing it and I give in to peer pressure, bands that make me proud to be America's armpit: Overkill, Whiplash, Deadly Blessing, Symphony X, Discordance Axis, Burnt by the Sun (fuck Virginia, I want Dave Witte back), Streetlight Manifesto (ska band).

Also apparently a bunch of Bay Area bands moved here for a while or something.

I'll thank you not to point out the many embarrassments to New Jersey's musical exports. There are none. My Chemical Romance is from New York, actually. No, really. Our state government traded Ellis Island for them as part of their continuing effort to make everyone leave.

Look at my location thingy. I'm kinda proud, I guess you could say, to grow up around where the whole Death Metal thing was happening, like Morbid Angel and Obituary. Hell, Chuck Schuldiner went to a high school not too far from my own, and this one arcade owner dude says his friend has original Death stickers from when they were just starting out.

So if a band is from Florida, I'd be a little bit happy about it, even though this place is a humid shithole.

I know how that goes, I lived down in Naples for several years when I was a kid. My uncle worked for a relative of Glenn Bentons at a golf course.

I'm a big patriot. I buy and support a lot of the local bands, and also attend the newbie bands gigs. I'm proud of the many bands Malaysia has produced, just sad some of them are condemned and arrested for being negative influence. The only way to show support is to buy their merchandise and listen to them.

I'm not sceptical towards foreign bands, just that I spend too much money on local merchandises and I'm broke to buy any foreign ones. But I do set aside some cash for my favourite bands.

Well, if as in your case, bands a rebeing persectued for the music they play by the authorities, then it's a completely different thing and everyone should support them.

There are only 2 metal-bands where I'm from (a rip-off thrash metal band and a feeble NU-metal band), and they're not that great... No place for metallic patriotism here.

Nevermore. We win just cause of them...but I still have to mention:
Slayer
Morbid Angel
Cannibal Corpse
Iced Earth
Fergie
Megadeth
Overkill
Down
Testament
Tool

Hmm..now that I try to make a list, I notice that the US isn't really too strong with power/melodic metal...No Blind Guardian/Angra/Kamelot/Dragonforce/Iron Maiden for us.

Yeah but US has Manilla Road, Hammers of Misfortune and Slough Feg, so thats like melodic metal WIN right there.

I've been tagging bands by location on last.fm and US has like 36 and the next highest country has like 8... so I think USA is the country that wins >.>... although maybe not once you take population into consideration, then Iceland wins because they've got like 12 people who live there, 5 of which play in Sigur Ros and one of which is Bjork, making 50% of their country amazing musicians.

SoL are a pretty decent band though.
