No way! I agree on your underrated list, though. A lot of the greatest bands of the early 90's death metal scene were just too good for mainstream success.

I think he was saying they were overrated :O

I don't think they're overrated. Hence the "no way!"

Anal Cunt pisses on 99% of other humorous grind bands.

But that's not hard, considering humourous grind generally sucks.

I wouldn't say they were overrated as noone seems to like them. Regardless, they're a band where you spend more time reading the song titles than listening to the music. They don't do much for my disdain for all "comedy" grind/death bands.

I think they are pretty much considered grindcore classics and what i hate about it is that they started all of this humorous kind of grind that polluted the scene...

I'd take it one step farther and say most of his discography is underrated (except for blackacidevil and 666). The first four albums are great blues-ish hard rock.

Other overrated stuff IMO:
Mike Patton's solo projects - It is all just too art-faggish for me.
In Flames - Melodic Death Metal is cool just not them.

Underrated:
Sigh - Just as good as other early black metal bands with less recogniton.

I think Mike Patton's vocals in general are hella overrated.

They are good but nothing spectacular. I love Faith No More I just don't love the stuff he did afterwards which people rave over as 'genius'.

Yeah I think he makes alt-rock stuff like Faith No More, Tomahawk or Mr. Bungle's last album more interesting, but when he tries to be weirder than that he just totally ruins it. I think Fantomas's Delirium Cordia would have been a cool album except that whenever the vocals come in it totally ruins the atmosphere.

Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphent
It's a great album, but in my opinion its not the classic or masterpiece that many claim it to be. I prefer the Stormblast re-recording.

Underrated:

Fear Factory - Obsolete
This always seems to be overlooked in Fear Factory discussions. Demanufacture isn't their legendary album! This is!

+1

And Chaos AD, I would say, is the Sep's worst album. Directionless, boring, pointless bridge between thrash of Arise and tribal/groove of Roots. Both of which are far better.

And Patton is god.

Overrated:

3 Inches Of Blood
Anthrax
Manowar
Mastodon - They're good, but not near like what people say
Dimmu Borgir

Underrated:

Ministry
Skinny Puppy
Queensryche
The Hidden Hand
Meshuggah
Edit -
Chimaira - I know everyone hates them because Kerry King likes them and their lyrics aren't as good as some, but the last two albums are pretty good tech-thrash/core

Hmmm... as best thrash album ever, yes, as a pretty good thrash album, not at all.

It's true that Anal Cunt inspired a lot of worthless bands, but dissing them because of that is like calling Bathory crap for inspiring tons of unspirited pagan metal bands. Or Burzum for inspiring the current wave of emo bedroom black metal.

99% of gring is worthless anyway. Hail the pioneers, the rest can rot.

I agree with Better Than Raw aswell. Very underrated album, frankly it's a masterpiece of power metal.

More underrated ones:
Andi Deris - Come In From the Rain
Blaze - Blood and Belief
Bruce Dickinson - Balls to Picasso & Skunkworks
Symphony X - whole damn discography
Edenbridge - Sunrise In Eden
Iron Maiden - The X-Factor & Dance of Death

Overrated:
Anything by Nightwish, and the finnish metal scene in general

Correct. Best thrash album ever would be Pleasure to Kill. From Slayer's discography, i prefer Hell Awaits over Reign in Blood these days.

Slayer- Reign in Blood- not the fastest and most aggressive thrash album as many claim, and not particularly well written- some great songs, but most of them are too short and don't develop into anything . Just from 1986 alone, Darkness Descends and Pleasure to Kill out Reign in Blood.

Metallica- Master of Puppets- Its an all right album- but parts of it are really boring. How is this the greatest album of all time, let alone one of the greatest albums of all time?

Metallica- Black Album. Everyone knows why.

Megadeth- Countdown to Extinction. Same reason as Black Album.

The entire discography of Sonata Arctica- they have a few good songs here and there, but really, they lack everything that makes metal metal- namely, balls. Listening to Letter For Dana was one of the most emasculating experiences of my life.

Iron Maiden- A Matter of Life and Death- Boring album with good moments interspersed. Did every song but two really need to start with an acoustic intro?
Underrated:

Manticora- The best rising band in Power metal, yet few seem to be into them

Megadeth- Youthanasia- for reasons previously stated in this thread

Slayer- South of Heaven- Infinitely superiour to Reign in Blood, yet derided for being slower. Its much more thought out and well done.

Iron Maiden- The X Factor- Unfairly criticized, mainly because Blaze is the singer. But its much better than No Prayer, Fear of the Dark, and Dance of Death.

Judas Priest- Ram It Down: Proto Painkiller, with some more atmospheric songs (Blood Red Skies). A damn good album- the duelling guitar solos on the title track are about the best thing Tipton and Downing have ever done, which is saying a lot.

But after Halford's uncloseting, it's the most unintentionally hilarious album title ever.

There's a lot of strong opinions in this thread, i'm surprised there hasn't been an argument as of yet.

I'll give my 2 cents to some of the bands mentioned so far that i know of...

Sepultura - Arise

Definatelly NOT overrated. Sepultura's best album by a fucking country mile. Chaos A.D is good, but nowhere near the quality of Arise.

Metallica - Black Album

Is it overrated just because it was their album that made them popular? It is their most popular album...not their best...most popular. I can understand how it can be overplayed, but overrated? Never. I'll never get sick of that album.

Fear Factory - Obsolete

I'd have to agree here that Obsolete is an underrated album. That with Demanufacture are FF bests two albums. Demanufacture may get all the glory, but Obsolete goes to another level of awesomeness.

Blaze - Blood & Belief

An excellent return to form for Blaze in my opinion. A very underrated album. Proabably his best out of the three.

Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time

Very much underrated album. Probably my 2nd favourite Maiden album, after 7th son (which is also NOT overrated). Wasted Years, Stranger In A Strange Land, Alexander The Great & Caught Somewhere In Time are some of Maiden's best songs.

Iron Maiden - The X-Factor

Greatly underrated. I've been a Blaze supporter since day 1 and I enjoyed the two albums he made with Maiden very much. I think the X-Factor and Virtual XI were Maiden's best albums since 7th Son. FOTD and NPFTD were rather average in my opinion, so it was great to here something different when Blaze joined.

"Anything by Nightwish, and the finnish metal scene in general is overrated"

I almost fell off my chair when i read that...in fact, i did. That is by far the most idiotic and false comment i've read on here for a long, long time. Pure lunacy. There are two countries in Europe where the best metal music comes from: Finland and Germany.

Judas Priest - Ram It Down

I tend to agree that this album is looked over. It has some kick ass songs that are right up their with their best of all time. I may be on my own here, but i'd also add Turbo to the list of underrated albums. I dont care if people say that it sounds different or mainstream or whatever. I rekon it sounds great and is one of my favourite Priest albums.

I really cant think of any bands/albums which could be considered overrated. Everyone has a different opinion, which they are entitled too....except for that Finland comment  I just cannot accept that opinion.

I am too just giving my opinions and you can disagree with them if you want, thats what this discussion is about.

If i had to mention one band that could be considered overrated...i would have to say...Kamelot. I've heard all their albums and i just dont see what it is that makes them more superior than others. Most of their songs follow the same structure, most of them bore me cos they are slow and prod along. Musically, slow verses where Khan is almost speaking the lyrics, and then mid-paced choruses...

I'll admit, they do have quite a few good/great songs where they play the entire song up-tempo, like it should be. But they are too few and far between, and Khan's voice does annoy me at times too. I'm sorry, but i cant see any evidence of Kamelot being "groundbreaking" in their genre. I must say, however, that i thought Epica was a very good album and they do derserve credit for that. And also about half of Karma.

hmmm, thats about it i think

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is an incredible album, if you ask me. It's different than most Symphonic BM albums in that it's all evil 'n stuff but at the end it totally turns around and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It does get a bit repetitive at points, though.

And Obsolete has the distinct pleasure of having the best FF song ever on it-- "Resurrection." However, it does dip into some unneccesary filler material, as does almost every FF album.
