For those of us who are brave enough to share our non-metal indulgences in music, I thought it would be appropriate to have a thread to share those purchases and your thoughts about them.


So, I'll take the first plunge:

Last week I picked up a copy of Kate Nash's "Made Of Bricks" and Robert Plant/Alison Krauss "Raising Sand".

The last non-metal purchases I made were:

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siemese Dream
Primus - Pork Soda (no, I ultimately don't consider Primus metal)

That was almost seven weeks ago, though....

Don't we have the Alt. Metal forum's Purchases thread for this?

I was thinking the same thing. Though, technically, that's mostly geared towards nu-metal and hard rock. Not so much softer rock or non-rock.

I officially inquired with Zad about this foray and he suggested just creating a thread here in general music. So, I did. I was gearing this more toward all purchases that are outside the general genres of rock/hard rock/metal and anything on the fringe.

Made it a couple weeks ago. Been ages since then for non metal buys.

Ice music. Srsly.

How are you finding Made Of Bricks? Love it, personally, much better than Lily Allen. And I intend to get Raising Sand as well, the Daddy told me it was crap but I heard a radio track and it wasn't bad at all.

The last non-Rock/Metal purchase, which I may have mentioned already in Avant-Garde, was Einsturzende Neubauten - Alles Wieder Offen. Possibly a live album, not listened yet. Can't believe I'm the only one here into these guys, such a great Industrial band, and proper 'hitting random bits of metal to make music' Industrial rather than girly goth-electro Industrial. Very diverse, wonderfully atmospheric at times, highly recommended.

And hey, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have a new album out! Must get that, love those guys.

I have not had the opportunity to hear Lily Allen but I've heard the comparisons of Kate Nash to her. I like Kate's stuff. It's damn quirky but singing with such a profound British accent makes it almost impossible for me not to listen to her. I find it to be simple & fun music with tons of sarcasm. I mean with titles like Dickhead and Shit Song how can you go wrong?

I have a few Enya, Enigma, and Bond CD's. But I'm currently digging a Dejavodoo Spells debut. They're a local band.

I have bought this while I was 6th or 7th grade.

Definately. Check Lily Allen out for a more Dancehall-flavoured, slightly less sarcastic style.

And I've been meaning to get To The Five Boroughs for a while now after liking the radio-played songs from when it came out. Could never get into early BB, but I think I'll try and get this one...

The last non-metal purchase i made was 'Sountrack to a vacant life' by The Flashbulb. Absolutely incredible album. Possibly the most beautiful album i've heard.

Not too long ago I bought Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell by Jedi Mind Tricks. It completely crushes the arguement that all rap sucks, I'll tell you that.

Apart from that, I'm drawing a blank .

Awesome choice. You should get Legacy of Blood also, if you haven't already.

Just got the first three Tom Petty albums. I already have Full Moon Fever, Into The Great Wide Open and Greatest Hits. After watching his performance on the Super Bowl and catching a BBC Crown Jewels performance from around 1978 or so on VH1 Classics, I got on a Tom Petty kick of sorts!

Agreed, JMT is real hip-hop, which basically means it goes basically unnoticed in today's "rap" landscape. I would get Violent by Design also if you don't have it.

I'm going to have to get some TP, loved The Travelling Wilburys.

Beastie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs

For some reason, I'm really not into angry Rap/Hip-Hop. It just turns me off.

A while back, I got Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass, and it's really fucking good. It's not angry nor is it aggressive; it's poetic. It crushes that same argument for me, but in a calmer way. Which is the way I like it.

But I'm still really really picky about the genre. Apart for Aesop Rock and maybe one or two others, I haven't come across any Rap that I really really like.
