Does anybody know a site where I could specify my location and the bands that interest me, and it will update me automatically if there is a show of one of them around?

...there has to be.

www.bandsintown.com

Ticketmaster's local variant does something similar iirc, but I tend to use this. Available as mobile app and FB widget too...

There was, or is not sure, a bill being passed here in Canada that would see the regular $150 rate for a touring international band raised to $425 a show. 99% of the bands I see come from Europe or the US. This is BULLSHIT.

Cool site though.

Totally sounds BS. hope it doesn't pass for our Canadian friends' sake.

Last.fm is pretty good about getting user submitted lists of who is coming when, but Bandsintown works too. It's suggestions are sometimes off though and the emails annoy me. The blogs, InvisibleOranges and MetalSucks, keep me informed of tours enough that most things I see there or will see on the Last.fm list when I peruse every month or so.
