I know I'm digging up really old news here, but I've just been thinking about the relevance of Machine Head's song Aesthethics of Hate as a response to the William Grim article of the same name.

Now, I love the song musically speaking, but considered as a response to the article, I'm more than a little embarrassed about the lyrics. Having read the article just recently, I believe the juvenile, aggressive nature of the lyrics would probably have just served to fortify Grim's position on metalheads. Here are some samples:

"But your hate was over all too soon
Because nothing is over,
Nothing’s through,
Till we bury you
For the love of brother
I will sing this fucking song
Aesthetics of hate,
I hope you burn in hell
Woooaah!
The words I read on the screen
Left me fucking sick
I felt the hatred rising
You son of a bitch"

It would have been nice if a topic with this sort of importance was handled by a writer with a little more gravitas. It would have been nice if a writer could have expressed something along the lines of "Do you realise that by attempting to condemn hatred, you are actually condoning and promoting it? This makes you a hypocrite. Furthermore, the bible you pledge allegiance to suggest you should turn your other cheek. Failure to do this also makes you a hypocrite. The murder of a human being is not a joke, grow up and stop using your religion and political stance as an excuse for sadism."

Those wouldn't be the lyrics I'd suggest of course, just the message. Maybe a little trite still, but at least it would be better than, y'know, "BLLLAAAGHGHGHHHHH YOU ARE A FUCKY POO HEAD DON'T PICK ON MY FRIENDS MMMWMWAAAHAHHHHGGGHHHH", which is what we got.

It was highly amusing, and also terribly sad, to watch on television fans conducting a "vigil" for the slain Mr. Abbott outside of the Alrosa Villa. It was an assemblage of ignorant, semi-human barbarians who were filthy in attire and manner, intellectually incoherent and above all else, hideously ugly to the point of physical deformity. Here is a definite case in which the outer appearance of these "fans" accurately represented the hideousness of their souls. That the physical deformity of their ugliness was self-inflicted makes the spiritual tragedy of their misspent lives all the more tragic.

hahahaha awesome

But we both agree (as do all civilized human beings) that both Messrs. Haydn and Beethoven are numerous steps further along the evolutionary trail than Dimebag Abbott.

I think most civilized humans understand evolution. :(

Anyways yeah the article was obviously meant to be provocative so writing an angry song about it is playing into writer dude's hands. His argument is obviously dumb (religions conservatives were totally fans of Shakespeare and Beethoven in their day, etc blah blah blah), but I do like the beautiful, arrogant, perfectly groomed, flawlessly aryan persona that he tries to convey. Would've worked a lot better with less Fox News talking points though.

lols.

Flynn writes lame lyrics but this is his buddy, fans and friends getting bashed in the article so the knee jerk reaction is understandable. However, Machine Head lyrics and fans don't really lend themselves to an intelligent response. The funny thing is that I could make the same argument about Pantera just not rooted in a dumb Christian conservative bent.

Yeah, it's not like Rob Flynn writes like Barney Greenway the rest of the time, is it? I'm sure Dime appreciated it.

Yeah, my problem is that the song seems more destructive to the cause than helpful. Anyone listening to a Machine Head album is probably going to be on Flynn's side of the argument anyway, so you'd think that his primary goal would be to affect some sort of change of heart in Grim.

As it is, I can picture Grim giving a lecture on his article, and then actually using this song to illustrate his point, with a big fucking grin on his face.

Machine Head lyrics have always been atrocious (aside from the song Blood of the Zodiac).

However this is the best Machine Head song I've heard since The More Things Change.

This song was off the blackening, but you should listen to Unto The Locust. It's very, very good.
