Interestingly, I once read a news article suggesting a correlation between heavy metal fandom and high intelligence. I'm too lazy to dig it up right now, but considering how a lot of the metal fans I've met (at least on boards like this) have been surprisingly intelligent, I guess it isn't too surprising. Especially since metal is probably one of the more challenging genres of music.

+1 I remember that article. It emphasized Iron Maiden. I want to agree with DM and say there are other forces at work. Metal being an outsider thing; intelligence being an outsider thing, perhaps?

I thought you were mocking my reviews; I use lots of semicolons.

I'm a fan of convoluted yet clear writing.

So you WERE mocking my reviews!

Seriously, never quite sure if I should be doing more of this, this or, say, this.

more of the latter. that's why i liked Mischa's reviews, short and to the point.

There's no doubt that someone's music taste can reflect their intelligence (lets say, the musical equivelent of human intelligence is more challenging and complicated forms of music), but I do know a fair few intelligent people that listen to a lot of more simple and easy going music.

Example: I know someone who is in the top 5 of my year group at school, he listens to a lot of Coldplay and Wolfmother, and similar bands. More simple and easy going music. Another I know listens to a lot of post-punk.

So I guess I'm just saying it can swing either way.

That was also directed at high school kids wasn't it? From my experience, doing well in high school had more to do with not skipping to do drugs, rather than being smart.

if intelligence and music were somehow correlated, the black metalhead elitists received the shorter end of the stick.
