How did you peel the label off??
Basically, the media part of a CD is place closer to the top of the CD. That way the bottom can get scratched and scuffed and still work. I have many CDs with nicks and whatnot on the top and they play fine. The problem is when you nick that reflective part. If you hold the CD up to the light and look at it from the bottom (silver side) and you can see light coming through from the top, then it'll skip.
