It may be impossible on this type of message board, and if it were possible programming it may be a bitch, but how about an option to block all messages displayed by a certain poster? Rather than having all the flame-wars, the banninations, and all the melodrama, maybe an option (under the user profile?) to ban posts by certain people (like an email block list) could be implemented?

If I'm being flamed by a poster named shuten doji is a ball licker I'd rather just block him than have him banned outright, as he may have something usefull to say to other people.

Can it be done? Would anyone else like the option?

It's a good idea, but don't you want revenge when someone pisses you off? :)

This has been bought up many times before, and no-one ever answers my question: if they're in a conversation with someone else, you won't understand what it's about, will you?

If you find them that annoying, try and get them banned outright. There are forum rules (hey, and international ones!) about pissing people off here. PM them, asking them to stop, and then if that doesn't work take it to Mike.

I assume this is all theoretical?

There should be no need for an ignore feature in a friendly community.

This version of phpbb doesn't have an "ignore" function. I've used it on other forums, though.

When an "ignored" user makes a post, you'll see a one liner along the lines of "this post is from a user on your ignore list, and will not be shown" instead of the actual post. You also have the option to view the post.

It can be helpful, but if a certain user does nothing but start flamewars (and never talks about music), I'd prefer to just get rid of them instead of everyone having to ignore the guy.
