Post subject: To Review Or Not To Review?
PostPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2006 7:05 am
So, each week I try and decide what to review. I have a short list so far of what I'm thinking about reviewing, but I don't really know what I'll review until that moment. So, here is the short list:

Nightingale - Nightfall Overture (Goth-Influenced AOR/Melodic Rock)
The Gates Of Slumber - Like A Plague Upon The Land (Doom)
The Gates Of Slumber - The Awakening (Doom)
Titanium Black - Bleed For You (Modern 80's Rock/Metal)
The Frank Hannon Band - Guitarz From Marz (Southern Rock)
Pro-Pain - Prophets Of Doom (Metal/Hardcore)
Icarus Witch - Roses On White Lace (EP) (Heavy Rock/Metal)
Dead Soul Tribe - The Dead World (Prog-Rock/Metal)
Paradise Lost - Paradise Lost (Heavy Rock/Metal)
The Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra (???????)
Ashlee Simpson - I Am Me (Classic)

In the past few weeks I've reviewed albums I thought people would be interested in hearing. I've reviewed two power metal-like albums, a hardcore album, a prog-rock album, and a semi-death metal album. A couple reviews have flopped, to say the least, at least on the board. So, am I wasting my time trying to review albums you may never be exposed to?

What are your thoughts about what I have reviewed and what I may review?

Well I think that the more "well-known" releases should come with a priority. Only when there is nothing of importance to review then you can focus on more obscure ones.
I'll leave the choice of the upcoming review to yourself.

oh, huh, I wouldn't necessarily treat it like that.. right now I'm reviewing one album from each good doom band that isn't yet represented here.. I wouldn't say completeness was as important as highlighting possible new bands for people who may be interested.

You are right to an extent. There aren't many doom reviews here, so you definitely need to fill a big gap.

I've liked most of your past reviews, but after I checked out a band based on your review, I ended up not liking them (- Cynic). But, you never know what is going to grab somebody so keep doing what you're doing.

I meant excluding Cynic. I liked the review and the band.

What band didn't you like?

Ramallah, Core Device, Sanity. I forgot you reviewed Dream Catcher. That would be another review and band I liked, along with Sword. So maybe I should rephrase myself. I like half your reviews, and the other half didn't appeal to me. Keep doing what you're doing. :D

I can see Sanity and Ramallah, but Core Device are so good I'm going to have to call you crazy. =) Did you buy the CD, or just listen to that one song?

Didn't you post like three songs? If I remeber right I didn't really like any of them. But, if you think I'm crazy, I'll give them another spin.

Core Device (EDIT) were OK, not really great though. I have no clue why I just typed "Core Device" the first time I posted this...

you should review the Dead Soul Tribe album and convince me to give it another listen.

Not sure I could do that. It's my least favorite. Good but not great. 70/100.

I decided to bump your thread and use it for a completely different purpose. it's a mutiny.

anyway, how strictly do we adhere to this "consider an album for classic status when it's ten years old" thing? Dopesmoker by Sleep (which is an obvious classic) was ostensibly released in 2003 but was actually recorded half way through the nineties, and label wankers stopped it being from released earlier.. I wonder if I could get away with classicifying it.

I'd support you. I know my support means a lot to you, so there you go. Considering a Machine Head album's been classified, there shouldn't be much worry about Sleep, surely?

Pffft. Sleep who? would be my response. Burn My Eyes is a complete classic.

As for what is and what isn't a classic, there are definite classics out there and then there are personal classics. I think most of the classic reviews here are personal classics. For instance, I would never consider any Godflesh album a classic regardless of how good they are. So, if you feel Sleep is a classic, then add it and justify it well. Not much more you can do than that, really.

Uh... why would you never consider Godflesh classic? Every post-89 industrial metal band cites them as an influence. They helped start a new generation of metal.

So... why?
