Haven't seen Lone Wolf McQuaid in ages. Funny, because the other night I was strongly considering Forced Vengeance, but rewatched

instead.

the poster for Lone Wolf McQuade alone makes me want to see it!

you know guys, i never saw any Star Wars movie. just never got round to it. but i live with my sister and a cousin, and both their significant others are crazy about it, and one of them in particular wouldn't get off my back about catching up so we could all go and watch the new one.

the thing is, due to its cultural relevance, i know most of the story and the key/famous scenes/lines, and Episode IV for me was just going through a bunch of not-so-exciting stuff (i know what's going to happen, and the visual effects won't impress someone who's seen any modern movies) happening between famous scenes that i'd already seen or heard of a million times before. decided to just read up on the plots and characters and go see the new one soon.

saw The Force Awakens, disliked it. frankly it seems directed at 12 year olds and the highly nostalgic, and anyone who didn't grow up with SW or is in the right age will find it hard to convert to Jedi'ism.

also saw Inside Out. excellent, as per usual from Pixar.

happy new year by the way :dio: :dio:

A Very Long Engagement - kinda schmaltzy but kinda cute

Two Days, One Night - A+ critique of capitalism

The quality of this one was a big surprise to a lot of people as not much was expected out of Stallone and Co.'s sixth installment in the series. But Rocky was always an underdog story and the negative buzz surrounding the film felt totally perfect for the Philadelphia slugger to prove to the world he had one more great round left in the tank. The best since the original and a wonderful (then) coda for Stallone's most beloved character. So many manly tears.

One of Duke's very best. Loved this movie since I was a kiddo.

Wild Tales, for the third time - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_Tales_(film) - do yourselves a favour and watch this absolutely fantastic film. to me, it's damn near perfect. love every minute of it. my cousins loved it too.

on the new star wars, some criticism. possible spoilers below:
technological inconsistency is nothing new but really annoyed me. so they've mastered light-speed travel but they still can't consistently produce food?

why is everyone in that shithole desert planet when they could be in that luxuriant green and seemingly empty planet?

why do lasers cripple some ships and barely even scratch others? hell they even sometimes cripple the same ship on one occasion only to barely scratch it on another.

Poe Dameron fucking abandoned Finn in the ship and suddenly they're all like bros and shit. also, Finn looks bewildered/befuddled for the whole movie. make a normal face already, asshole.

had it with the fucking cute robots. it's like this movie is aimed squarely at 12 year olds. oh wait.

why did Finn "turn" in that one battle? had he not been in many other definitely bloodier battles? no, it was his first one? so the First Order/Empire takes rookie soldiers on strategically important missions?

and why does the First Order/Empire come totally undermanned on these vital missions? AND DON'T THEY FUCKING GUARD THEIR PRISONERS?!

and Finn is a sanitation guy who knows how key First Order facilities are run and what they weaknesses are, and they can just walk in and kidnap the captain, and Han and Chewie plant like 5 bombs and blow that whole thing up, and the whole thing is a repeat of how they did in the first movie.

fuck star wars. i wouldn't be half as pissed if not for the hype.

gotta hand it to Disney, though. between their own material, Pixar, Marvel, and now Lucasfilm (a bargain at $4bn), they will dominate the film industry.

Zatoichi's Revenge

A tale in which our hero takes on crooked magistrates, a hoard of yakuza thugs and his master's killer in one of the best installments of the long-running movie series.

Another all-time favorite that gets a watch at least once or twice a year. Peck's portrayal of Atticus Finch still stands as one of the great male role models to emerge from the silver screen. A perfect illustration of the nobility of the common man.

Took little brother to see Deadpool, which was much better than I expected, thankfully. Stan Lee at a strip club alone worth it.

Deadpool was a ton of fun. Reynolds and director Tim Miller really did the character justice...and earned every bit of that R rating in the process.

Also saw the Revenant this week as well. The cinematography, along with the landscapes, were clearly the centerpieces of the film and both absolutely gorgeous to behold. The story was a fairly standard family revenge plot but Leo really turned it up a notch going full method in spite of the bitterly cold climate. Fellow Oscar nominee Tom Hardy was excellent as well portraying DiCaprio's shifty adversary Fitzgerald. Hardy's thick put-on Texas accent did sound a little too close to serial killer Buffalo Bill in my opinion.

Looking forward to seeing the Revenant.

Triple 9 - Solid cops & robbers drama. Felt very True Detective crossed with Training Day.
Maps to the Stars - Made me laugh more than once, unintentionally. Ridiculous film, Cronenberg has really gone downhill.

Watched Polanski and Fassbender Macbeths. Liked both but for different reasons.
