Very slightly on the malty side, but balanced enough, which I like, sweet with a hint of smokiness nuts and chocolate or (possibly caramel) at the end.
I tend to favor the Pacific Northwest when it comes to beer, though obviously not as a rule.
Another really good American Amber / Red Ale is Prohibition Ale (Speakeasy brewery out of San Francisco), but it goes for around $12 a six pack.
Those beers, and the stout from the previous post, look like beers I'd be interested in, probably because they aren't IPAs. Being on the opposite coast makes it harder to track them down, of course.
Rarely do I have money to get proper beer, but of late I've been a fan of Saranac in upstate NY. Never met one of their non-IPAs I didn't like, wish they would focus more on them.
This is surprisingly light for its color, actually a good one for hot days.
PS-Anyone else feel the need to try Steel Reserve now?
Not into IPA's either... I won't necessarily turn down a decent one, but they never really suited me as much as the brown / amber ales, imperial stouts, etc.... do like a good wheat ale, though.
That Sarnac looks beautiful. There is a Belgian style ale called Asylum (Left Coast brewery) with an ABV of 11.8%. A bomber will get a nice buzzz going. Have to be in the right mood for a Belgian Tripel style, though.
Oktoberfest is just around the corner too, we have a nice one up here (I live in the Sierra foothills gold country not far from Tahoe), really looking forward to it.
