I use these on the bus or other noisy trafficky type places:

Sennheiser HD477 for when I'm walking my doggy or around the house listening (they don't block noise but don't involve sticking something inside my ear). They have great bass sound which is really good for metal. Not sure if you can still buy them... got my pair like 6 years ago.

Headphones that I have personally used or owned under $150

Sony MDR-V700DJ

I listened to these for about 5 years

Pros: Punchy sound, decent bass, closed ear
Cons: plastic hinges crack after a few years, uncomfortable at first, a bit heavy

Sony MDR-V600 Studio Monitor

I listen to these at work currently many hours per day

Pros: Light, Comfortable, sound very nearly as good as the V700s, bit better bass
Cons: None yet , although the construction may not hold up.

Sony MDR-XB700

I had these for about a week, but returned them because they aren't truly closed ear

Pros: BASS, very comfortable
Cons: Semi-closed ear design

And I know they are over $150 but the best headphones I have had the pleasure to listen to are the monster beats by dr. dre

I've also tried several sennheisers, but I thought the bass was weak.

Thanks very much for taking the time to write your post. I currently have the Sony MDR-V600 and also a pair of earbuds that are also Sony which are very decent. The last two headphones look good especially the ones that you say that are from Dr. Dre. The thing is I'm looking for earbuds because I wear glasses and they are much easier and more comfortable.

Oh man, those Dr. Dre ones would be a dream to own.

Boss headphones are quite good. I decided not to buy headphones because I really think I should test it on the spot before buying it and not really trust reviews on the websites.

Bose is really good. The ones I've on in my avatar are Bose. Great for gaming, music and movies. I recommend buying a decent sound card, something about $60. It really improves the sound quality.

I'm trying to buy a pair of headphones with superior sound quality but nothing too expensive. I'm willing to pay up to 150 bucks. Does anyone have experience with a pair that delivers stellar sound quality with my budget?

Thanks very much for the recommendations but I haven't read a lot of good reviews about those headphones. You obviously have had a good experience with them, though. I was looking at a pair of Shure headphones on amazon that has had a lot of good reviews. These: http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SE315-K-Iso ... 435&sr=1-6 They are a bit over my price range at 178. At the end of the day you never really know which ones to buy because: 1. I don't have a big budget and 2. There are so many different brands you are bound to make a mistake.

Sony MDR-7506 is all I will ever use for the foreseeable future. I like reference monitors because I can always adjust the source material so to the tone is "flat", but I can't take away coloration from a speaker that another brand might impose.

I've decided not to buy any headphones at the moment. After all the ones I have work quite fine and I am satisfied with them for now. Instead I am going to buy quite a few albums with that money so I am pleased, either way. Thanks for all the help.

I've owned like 4 or 5 pairs of good headphones, and in my humble opinion the best sound quality for under $100 is from Grado: http://www.gradolabs.com/ But, they do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to block out noise. Don't get them if you want to use them away from home. My favorite in-ear company is Ultimate Ears, and that's what I have now.

I just use a pair of $40 sony black earbuds, they sound fine.

After trying Dr. Dre at HMV I must they are outstanding headphones! Fit for any kind of music. They only big problem is that they are too expensive.

I use Sennheissers (can't remember which ones as I've had them for 5 years) and they seem pretty good. Can't remember how they compare to Sonys as it's been over 5 years since I've used a Sony pair.
