Cain and Abel as it is mentioned was one of the first murders, and as man crawled from primordial origins to the creation of the nation states of today. One of the major contagion of the human condition has been violence, whether it be an oppressive state, conflicting ideologies, or just a tense period of bloodshed. The question posed is: Are we inherently disposed to a violent predilection? As we find ourselves growing or rather becoming more machine, where does the human condition fit as our ancient brain wrestles with the issues of war? Quite obviously world peace may be considered an illusion, but in the 21st century do you believe it is possible for the human race to find other solutions as opposed to violence?

I believe it can. Don't see how any human being can't believe that.

We achieved just that in (Western) Europe, with the European Union. Our continent has never been as peaceful in the whole history as it is since 1950. 60 years of peace. French and German, who used to hate each other's guts, now are the best allies in the world. The same goes with UK and... well, pretty much everyone.

We'll see if it lasts, but I'm confident we can make it to 100 years. A general rule of thumb is : the wealthier nations are AND the more bounded their economies are, the less appealing war is.

I don't know, violence will never cease to excist. People say it doesn't solve problems, but it does. Efficiently. Not saying I'm for it, but think about it...

Temporarily yes. It's a never-ending circle. Violence lead to social instability (duh) and should be considered a last resort only.

I grew up seeing this shit on an almost daily basis (probably why, as an adult, I really abhor violence), and it occurs a lot more than the so-called news media lets on.
I could quite literally post hundreds of these stories.

As long as humans exist, there will always be sociopathic people who inflict violence on others for no good reason. Sad, but true. I think the most we can do is just treat each other kindly.

I remember while living in downtown San Jose, was walking down the street about dusk, heard what sounded like a gunshot, and walked around the corner to see a crowd and a dude lying on the ground. It's a strange thing to (almost) witness in person.

This guy's death can be witnessed worldwide. When you really think about it, it's really insane. You're there, sitting on a comfy chair, and you watch the genuine death of a guy who probably did not deserve it.

I try not to think about that kind of things, I'd be driven crazy otherwise.

What an age we live in, eh?
