It's 2. Edit : because of the parentheses of course. Edit #2 : parentheses you're actually calling "brackets" in your fucking language. Edit #3 : Oh, it seems you people also say "parentheses". Good for you. |

Edit : because of the parentheses of course. You know something. This has gotten all over the net over the last few days and everyone from math professors to engineers to the average joe are divided on this. Some say 288 and some say 2. I gotten 2 because of PEMDAS but everyone is saying that L2R(Left to Right)is the right way to solve it. At this stage I don't know anymore. |

Fucking PEMDAS. Whoever says 288 is fucking stupid. Why would you ever divide the 48 by the 2 when the two still has to be distributed to what is in the parentheses and it is in relation to. We call them parentheses. |

@Metalstorm : Seriously ? I've always been told you have to calculate what's in the parentheses/brackets first. ![]() |

Careful with the internet and everything science-related. I've seen people maintaining dragons really existed 500+ years ago, and disappeared because knights slain them all. People who were claiming having studied history. I'm told you have plenty of people like that, in the US. You should put them in zoos, they are fun to watch and listen to. trapt wrote: http://www.google.com/search?q=48%C3%B72%289%2B3%29&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
Google has undermined my high school education. Fuck google. This is totally bullshit. WTF ?! ![]() Shit, I'm a PhD candidate in economics, I manipulate advanced statistic models among other things, and when asked "48÷2(9+3)=?" I'm not so sure anymore what the right answer is. I'm such a joke. Happy, MetalStorm ? Are you happy ?!! |

48÷2(9+3)=288 48÷[2(9+3)]=2 .:crast:. edit: If it had been written like this: Quote: 48÷2*12
it would be easy no? What seems to be throwing people off, is the thought that because the * is not written out, the multiplication gets precedence over the division. (by juxtaposition). Personally I would make sure to have enough brackets/parenthases to not cause such ambiguity. |

288 here, the problem lies in the division sign, everything gets clearer if you think of it as a fraction, you wouldnt normally write a division sign while doing equations. |
