Post subject:  Looking to buy a laptop...

...and I know jack about computers/specs/ etc..

it's mainly going to be for internet, music, movies, etc.. I'm not big on the whole PC gaming thing, but some games do interest me. Startcraft 2 for example...

what should I look for? I obviously want it to be fast, have a good bit of memory, a good video card, and all that crap. But it doesn't have to be top of the line stuff.

the store I will probably be buying from is FutureShop, which is a Canada only store.

here is a list of laptops that I can choose from. But most of the stuff is like a foreign languge to me.

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/category ... af4455en01

any help is appreciated

also since it will be used for movies and a few games, I would like a bigger screen.

and the price is not really a concern for me.

My laptop has a 17" widescreen, which is more than enough for watching flicks and casual videogaming. It's bigger and heavier than most laptops for that reason, which makes lengthy lugging a bit of a chore, but on the other hand it also means you get a decent-sized keyboard with a numpad.

I bought mine three years ago, and it's still functioning well enough for games that came out more than a year ago. When I ordered it I put in the second-best of each; best videocard at the time was the Nvidia 8800, so I chose the 8600, etc. Choose well, because changing parts after it's assembled is next to impossible.

I have a 17" and it's bulky but it's nice to watch movies on. My girlfriend bashes it for being so large yet she isn't complaining when we're going at it, watching movies that is.

2.2 GHZ processor speed is solid. I wouldn't go less than 3gb of RAM on Vista but I have no clue what Windows 7 would require. I have a 140gb of music. Not sure what you have but keep in mind that music storage shouldn't be more than half your hard drive size.

Get a Mac.

Honestly, I've had one for about a year now and I have absolutely zero problems with it and I love it. I realize there's probably some anti-Mac bias, but whatever...

all i can say is don't buy an Asus. i have one and my cousin has one and both computers died and had to be sent back for repairs. also it's just a stupid computer, can't change the volume with a dial, have to use the keyboard, sometimes you minimize a game just because of that. stupid design.

(as you can see i also have a very limited grasp of computers)

Pretty limited on the gaming front though.

Get the dual core one for 479. Jesus I can't believe they still sell single core laptops.

I mean really you could just go with the 369 but screw single core. It's going to do what you want it to do but that dual core is going to be a lot more beneficial and get things done faster, particularly with Windows 7.

They all have Windows 7, so yeah.

The people advocating Macs can all shut up.

If you just want a computer for the basics (internet, movies, word processor, etc.) then Macs are easy.

Whatever you say. Most people that I know that have Macs like them. They just aren't cool on the internets.

so I got a Sony VAIO.

I wish I could find the exact model on the site so I could post it here.

but, the guy at futureshop was saying that this is a good machine. pretty powerful for a laptop. dual core processor, but acts like its 4. which I don't actually get, but it sounds good. 15.6 inch screen, DVD player/burner, built in web cam, etc etc etc...

it looks good, and it runs good. if I don't like it, I have 14 days to take it back and I get a full refund.

I Have a laptop that is 10 years old. The motherboard and all of the other hardware attached to it was made by Asus. even thought it is branded as Toshiba.

So it's unfair to say it's cheap crap.

Personally, Get whatever is cheap. After using a lot of computers, I would say something that is cheap and has all the bells and whistles you want. The specs of the Hardware are going to be very good on even the cheapest new computer.

I love everything about my MAC. I've had it for over two years and it still works just as good as the first day I turned it on. I have had zero issues with it. My wife is completing grad school and says it (MAC) is so much easier to use than her PC.
