Post subject: | Super NES or Sega Genesis: Which did you own? |
Well, in the midst of all the political and pop-culture related discussions here on Helheim, here's something completely out in left field: Which of the two big competing 16-bit systems did you own? I owned a Super NES. However, a couple years ago, I began playing Genesis games on the Wii VC and XBLA. I will definitely say that the SNES was the better system overall (better games, better graphics, better sound). But the Genesis nonetheless had some fine entries. Sonic The Hedgehog 1, Vectorman, ComixZone, and Phantasy Star IV to name a few. Of course, in video game circles, it became somewhat trendy to bash the Genesis during the late-90's. I even remember, at the time, frequenting a video game message board where somebody openly admitted to preferring the Genesis over the SNES, only to be met with tons of flaming and criticism from some of the other posters (to be fair, though, most of the people on that MB were IMO douchebags). Nonetheless, let's give credit where credit's due: It was the first game console to give Nintendo some real competition, it helped bring video games to a more mature audience (the Playstation would later solidify this), and say what you want about the ethics and sportsmanship of Sega's aggressive marketing campaign, but there's one thing you can't deny: It worked! The Genesis, for at least a few years, was the "cool" system, while the SNES was perceived by mainstream as a "toy." And while Sega's ads may seem kind of lame in retrospect, they were actually quite devestating if you were an 11 year old SNES owner in the early-90's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7nsBoqJ ... re=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlulSyBI2aY And, as an added bonus, here are a couple mid-90's Game Gear commercials: http://redirectingat.com/?id=593X1004&u ... o8xM6Zi5Zs (a commercial that was actually banned from television due to its Southern stereotyping). http://redirectingat.com/?id=593X1004&u ... P04XzC-GkA (this one was actually pretty funny) So which of these systems did you own (if any)? |

I'm too old for those fancy 16 bit machines ![]() Nah just kidding, I had a friend with the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis I guess) and another with a Super Nintendo. I gotta say, I enjoyed playing on the Genesis a lot more but I think that had more to do with the games my friends had than the actual systems. On the Genesis we played a lot of NHL 93 and Golden Axe. On the SNES the only good game my friend had was Super Mario World. The systems I had personally: Amiga 500->Sega Master System->Nintendo 8 bit->PC and never looked back. |

I had both! I loved my SNES, still have it to this day. Went through a few Mega Drives but don't remember if I have any of them left over. |

SNES all the way. My brother and I used to argue with friends that owned Segas. Even back then we had these types of discussions. Hilarious. |

I owned a Genesis, but I'll admit that Super Nintendo was the better system. Sega had a few gems for sure like the Sonic games, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Shinobi. It's been so long, I can't remember what else I had back then.... I actually owned the Sega CD add on, got it the year it came out. I know the main selling feature of the Sega CD were those live film type games (Sewer Shark anyone?) but for me I really enjoyed the better sound quality that the CD games offered. Games like Sonic CD and Eco the Dolphin - Tides of Time had fantastic soundtracks. I actually have all the Sonic CD songs burned on my computer. For those that are into Video game music, check these songs out: Sonic CD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gri3-_7YQDk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxeWV-fh1F0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkLVddtjPCU Ecco the Dolphin - Tides of Time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2veP4Fnb ... re=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JONGBcqzDKk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRhSXBKZ ... re=related |

Well, the first console I got was PS1, but I remember playing a lot of Sega and SuperNintendo at various friends'. Since then it's been going like this: PlayStation -> Xbox -> PC -> Xbox 360 Never was much of a PS guy, except Tekken of course. Never liked Nintendo either. |

Well, being myself a casual RPG-buff, I guess I tend to gravitate towards systems like the SNES. Final Fantasy III (okay, VI if you want to get all technical) is still my favorite video game of all time. I kind of wish I didn't sell it a couple months ago (yes, there do exist stores that still take old SNES games). |

I had both the Genesis (Mega Drive in Australia) and the SNES. In fact, I remember having both and the NES and Gameboy all at the same time. Both were good and both had their fair share of top games, but I always liked my SNES more. Luckily, I can now play every single game ever made for SNES, Genesis and NES on emulators, and play on my PC with controllers in the USB ports. The fun never ends and whenever I need an ol' skool video game fix, it's all right there for me. |

Neither, my parents were pretty intolerant of computer games... I had a master system for a bit, until I got old enough to get a PC which I needed for "work". |
