Finally bought a Halo game (Halo 3).
I don't get all the love for this shit... It's pretty good but pretty generic.
Halo 3 is pretty weaksauce, but Halo, Halo 2, Halo ODST are all great and the new Halo Reach looks pretty awesome.
Halo 1 is the only really, really great Halo game. The rest are close to greatness but the magic of the first game isn't there. I have very high hopes for Reach though.
I don't get things like this. You'd rather play Halo 1 than Halo 3? Although Halo 2 and Halo 3 is probably is one of the only examples where I'd say the sequel was the lesser of the two games, they're both huge upgrades over Halo 1 in terms of gameplay. Like, Super Smash Bros. was a great game for its time and I loved it, but I can't even play it anymore because it's so much worse than Melee and Brawl.
Halo 2 and 3 feel so... contricted as far as gameplay goes. In Halo: CE there were a ton of HUGE levels (such as when you first land on the planet and the mission where you find the control room), plus more complex levels where you can decide which objectives to complete first (The Silent Cartographer), but Halo 2 and 3 are much more "Go from point A to point B" type games. Besides, the mystery surrounding the first game is far superior to the stories of the sequels, which were weighed down too much by explanations of the Covenant's religion, among other things. Furthermore, the original game just seemed more... natural, I guess. In the sequels they tried to cram in too many extra things (dual wielding, the ability to play as The Arbiter, etc.) and things didn't seem quite as right. Halo: CE feels like a much more solid game than any other Halo game.
So to re-cap. I prefer Halo: Combat Evolved because:
- More freedom in levels
- Simple, ambiguous yet effective story
- Solid gameplay mechanics that are perfect how they are
Plus, the original pistol.
