48÷2(9+3)=288

48÷[2(9+3)]=2

I don't think this is right. 2(9+3) is one number. You cannot separate them. Distribution makes the answer 2.

288 here, the problem lies in the division sign, everything gets clearer if you think of it as a fraction, you wouldnt normally write a division sign while doing equations.

Actually the problem is 2(9+3). Is it classified as one component or 2?

Meaning does 2(9+3)=2 * (9+3) in which case makes it 288 using the order of operations? Or is it one whole component meaning is the 2 part of (9+3) in which case using the OoO method makes it 2?

That's what is confusing a lot of people.

I agree.

Not enough talk about politics.

I like this thread. It is interesting to see how man people disagree on what seems to be a simple math problem.

I want to believe this so badly.

With a fraction, it would be like:

48
--------
2(9+3)

which would totally make the 2(9+3) a single quantity.

I also like it. I'm quite convinced by the point "288-guys" made. It means I made a fool of myself, but I'm fine with that as half the planet did (seriously, this is all over the web, check it out).

Casio fx-115 ES says:

48*division sign*2(9+3) = 288

48*over*2(9+3) = 288

Punched in exactly as written. This calculator has never been wrong in two years or my teacher would have come along and explained how to properly use the calculator. Even with a multiplication sign after the two, the answer is the same.

Nope. I have no idea how it is arriving at this conclusion.

However, when you use the Communitive Property and move the numbers around to:

(9+3)48/2

You get a syntax error, which indicates that the way the pro0blem is setup originally is incorrect, kinda like what crass wrote.

The only machine saying 2 is MetalNESS' calculator. Even machines are arguing on this.

Any reason this particular equation was chosen? :P

The answer is 2, by the way.

Yes because this spread like wildfire all over the net. Countless forums across the web posted this and man did it get out of control.

I'm shocked though about the civilized discussion here. Most forums had people flamming each other like crazy.

I think he meant why this particular equation, and not another one, was chosen in the first place.

And yes, from what I've seen, people are throwing themselves at each other's throats. It's ridiculous. I hate people almost as much as I hate Dark Moor, sometimes.
