I hope they don't give it the Rome/Deadwood treatment aka spend a lot of money on the show and then prematurely pull the plug on it when it doesn't get Sopranos-like ratings.

I'd even be fine with that. Those shows pushed the boundaries of television to the point where those kind of shows now have a market. If it fails and starts a new wave of fantasy shows and miniseries that are actually worth watching I'll be happy.

The initial reaction has been crazy for the HBO show. A bunch of magazines named it the most anticipated show of 2011 and I don't think that it'll disappoint with all the talent that's behind it.

Check out the house featuretes on youtube. They did a cool look at each house, which is very neat if you have read the books. I like how close each character fits to my mental image of them.

The best is Tyrion, he looks like he has nailed probably the most difficult role to play. Let me know when you see the "close the door" part, hillarious.

I didn't, thanks. I won't comment it because I don't want to jinx it, but... Anyway, you got my point.

Edit : Sean Bean sure knows how to behead people.

I haven't read the books but I'm a big fantasy fan and I keep hearing good things about them. Not sure if I should read the books or watch the show... I'm leaning towards the show though, as there are always books I need to catch up on. The preview was certainly interesting enough.

The books are a must, read the first one and see what you think. Ideally you should read it before watching the tv show, as I'm afraid the series will skip things here and there (it's pretty much derogatory, the books are dense).

So. You have 12 days. Tick... tock... :D

Definitely try to read the books, but honestly I imagine the first book will last a couple of seasons in show time. George has already stated that while the core of the story is intact, the show will take a few liberties for the sake of consuming time (think filler). Of course this is done with his approval, but if you watch the 15 minute segment that was recently released on youtube, you can already see small changes.

Also, I like the fact that they do not appear to be shying away from the books graphic content. Ned wasnt fucking around with that deserter:

"Please tell my family I am sorry....."

Swing/splat/fountains of blood :D

More interested to see what will happen re SPOILERS incest and throwing-kids-out-of-windows themes. Plus, obviously, midget sex.

I'm past half the first book, I think I'm gonna make it! It's really good; in fact I'm liking this more than Moorcock's work. He has great ideas, but the narrative is a bit dull. Elric is the better character though, he would slay the Lannister's and Stark's with his talking sword and the power of Lord Arioch :dio:

I am reading it in english ;) , in fact I'm planning to learn french only to read in their native language all the fantastic literature and poetry you frenchies have. I will start with Bataille and Baudelaire. Gimme a few lessons, if you please, because I know nothing about french... :(

French is the worst existing language and is the embodiment of your worst nightmares. Learning french is like opening Pandora's box. You'll only find frustration, sorrow and despair...

... unless you manage to master it, in which case it is an immense joy. But you'll probably go insane trying. Be warned.

Anyway : A game of thrones !

Nope, the first season = the first book. Those who have watched the first six episodes have said that the pace is extremely quick rather than filler filled- the book itself is the shortest of the series but also the most concise by far. Tons happens in it.

Yep, responses have been very positive, with a few complaints here and there (some say the first two episodes in particular have a pretty rushed paced, and there have been a couple complaints about some of the actors, particularly the guy who plays Drogo and the girl who plays Dany). But overall the reviews are very encouraging.

Fucking great. As someone who haven't read the books I was definitely into it and I can't wait for the next episode.
