i was walking home alone last night at around 4am, and about 10 minutes from my place i saw a guy getting mugged by 2 others. as soon as i realised what happened i gave chase but a third guy came out of nowhere and pushed me against the wall, warning me to back off. i did, got the victim up and told him to come with me and get his shit back (we could still see them) but he was still in panic. asked 2 guys passing by to come with me and they just said sorry and moved on.

gave him my phone so he could call the cops, by then the others were out of sight. cops came soon and we drove around a bit trying to find them but to no avail. the guy calmed down in the end, at least he didn't get stabbed or something, they just took his phone.

dunno. should have stood up to the guy who pushed. he was bigger than me but half the time bullies become pussies if you stand up to them. should have just gone for it instead of stopping to think, just like i started running without even thinking about it. rather disappointed that in a street full of people no one did anything, even after it became clear that the guy was mugged and the people who did it were STANDING RIGHT THERE and i explicitly called out for help!

it's also as i said close to my place and i've walked up and down that road at night many times, but now i can't shake the feeling that it could have been me getting mugged. the place looks a bit dodgy but until now it was just that, looks.

in other news i think i'm going to Dundee, Scotland on wednesday or thursday. work stuff. going to stay there indefinitely but probably just a week or two. it's about an hour from Edinburgh so i know where i'm spending my weekend.

I guess you can never tell how people will react to a confronting situation like that. It's sad that no one else tried to help the guy but you can't blame them for it either.

I think it's pretty badass that your first reaction was to run and help, Az.

i didn't think. if i had maybe i would have done nothing at all.

a friend of mine said that if it were just the two of us and it was me getting mugged, there was a fair chance the other guy would have tried to intervene, but that in a larger group people stop and count on someone else to do it for them, and that's what happened on saturday night, that the only really surprising thing is that the muggers would really try what they did in front of so many people.

Desperation breeds such brazen acts I'm afraid. I would have to assume that's how those individuals found themselves needing to steal in the first place.

It's odd that so often the media praises those people that act without thinking in a given set of circumstances (the person who sees a drowning child at the beach and rushes in with no regard for their own safety) but never draws attention to the people too afraid to do it themselves. Those people always wind up being interviewed and talking about how heroic the other person was. Whilst the person's actions are indeed brave there should be some moral culpability on the people who would stand by and watch the child drown for example.

Feeling a fourfold epicenter of stresses lately:
-want to get great grades but not sure I'm smart enough
-want to be more active at my school and in my community but not sure if I have enough time and no opportunity has shrieked "do me!" yet
-want to be more friendly with my roommate but I'm not home that often and usually not in the mood to socialize when I am
-want to ask a girl out but I've liked her for three and a half years and despite positive signs in September I am worried she'll turn me down again

She's turned you down once before? Ask her out for drinks. It can be read as simply friendly or non-platonic, bracing your nerves while letting you go out with her and make your moves.

And grad school seeks to make you feel not smart enough. Own it, bro.

No idea how to make truth tables interesting but my students impressed me with their intelligence. (Apparently giving someone an X on a test is a good way for them to pick apart a text :p) teaching's a mixed bag

Cycling training tonight was both great because I've been away from it for 4 weeks and awful because I've been away for 4 weeks and it was a brutal session. Actually brutal is an understatement I finished the night puking into a bin which I'm sure is a lovely image for all of you

Edinburgh was awesome. quite beautiful, and the people were extremely friendly. had a deep fried pizza (crap, waste of a perfectly good pizza) and deep fried mars bar (actually works).

fell asleep resting my head on my hand, elbow on the table. hand slipped. hit my head on the table. bled. hilarity ensued.

Kinda hoped it involved a giant X across the entire page.

Read a chapter from Hegel for class this week. Email at 7am the day of class from prof: would you mind presenting something today in class so that the people unfamiliar with Hegel will be able to get everything in the chapter? It's just the master-slave dialectic section, but ugh. Kinda frantic to get notes scribbled down now.

I'm conflicted. The Indian restaurant near my apartment sucks, but it is within walking distance. Like a two minute walk. I walk through my parking garage and five feet on the sidewalk and it's there. It's just not tasty.
