I read about this. Appearently when they said "death sentence" they meant life imprisonment, which raises the question as to why they didn't just say that in the first place, and that the trial was in French where they were not given any interpreters.

I have no use for blind ideology, from either side of the aisle.
Politics is such a steaming pile of bullshit, and it amazes me how people still cling onto the illusion that the two-party system is anything other than a colossal scam... one hand washes the other, didn't you hear?.
One example: the left support the unions, which push for absolutely insane compensation for working people, whilst on the take, of course. The right cries about how it is too expensive to pay American workers a "decent" salary (while CEO's rake in millions, of course, regardless of performance), hence, the massive outsourcing of said jobs... and, of course, the right is just as corrupt, naturally. The only one getting the shaft is the American worker.
As for health care... our so-called "public servants" have the best, on our tax dollar, why can't the rest of us?
Olberman, O'Reilly, Hannity, Matthews.... all a bunch of greasy fingered talking heads that are just as full of shit as the smarmy politicians running this country into the ground.
The left / right illusion is a trick... whilst the narcotized cattle that walk around this country with their eyes and ears seeing and hearing only that which they wish to see and hear, bickering about things that will never be resolved under the current two-party system (or outright red herrings such as "gay marriage" Roe v. Wade etc.), the whores of the Potomac laugh their asses all the way to the bank.

Ok, so, firstly by what criteria do you judge what is a "sane" amount to compensate working people? Are they being paid too much at the moment? In both of our countries the average worker's wages have been under pretty steady downwards pressure for several decades now.

And secondly, what evidence is there that unions are on the take? I mean, not some isolated examples (e.g. Jimmy Hoffa Sr.), but actually significantly more so than, say, employers or government? Honestly, I'd bet my house that the reverse is emphatically true.

The latter, in particular, really makes me annoyed. Utterly stupid stereotypes, that go depressingly uncountered because unions don't have the same media voice that employers or governments do.

You are talking about the two-party system and "the left" as if it were a part of that. It isn't: it is a very broad system of moral values that has assumed some form of political guise at one stage and a completely different one at another.
