Well, there is absolutely no reason why this topic cannot be didcussed in a mature fashion, and I'll conced it has been fun debating this. Kinda like playing lawyer, haha.
No hard feelings and all that.

CLEAR JOKE THAT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

McCain old man, die, Palin run country. Clearly, a majority of America agreed with my view of them, anyways.

As for teh fatties, that's no more comparable to racists than Devoted Walnut's hatred of emos. It's not real hatred. Serial killers get abused as children, yet it's perfectly fine to dislike them. And as a frequent excessive drinker myself, I find your remarks offensive.

Are you seriously comparing overweight people to serial killers?
I seriously never know whether or not you are being serious.
Seriously.

Heh, well, perhaps not. But there's more to my obesophobia than how fat people look; it's the way they smell, the space they take up, the message sent to other fatties that it's OK to be that large, the fact that they breed and have kids who are even fatter. Obesity is an illness, sure, but whilst some may have gland problems or whatever, the majority just eat too much. I don't hate them, anyways, I find it repulsive; I wouldn't want to hug a mental or go skinny-dipping with a man or have a close conversation with someone with halitosis either, it's a completely different issue than that of race. I'd say that obesity does more harm and damage to society than most things, all factors considered.

I prefer slim chicks. I also admire self-discipline. Having said that, fat chicks do serve a purpose when you are drunk and horny  so obviously we can't all be skinny.

I think obesity is mostly the bastard child of the food industry, automobile industry and the entertainment industry combined with a lack of government intervention. Folks walk/bike less, play less sports, and consume too much fatty convenience food. Why? People have not changed (we have the same DNA that we did 100 years ago) and they tend to follow the path of least resistance. The percentage of society that will motivate itself to go above and beyond the effort simply required to exist comfortably is just not going to change.

What can be done? I just got back from a 3-week European trip and certainly noticed less overweight people probably due to more walking/biking required to get around and traditions of eating less fatty foods .. but fast food and home entertainment seem to be having an impact on new generations. The problem is universal.

I think the only answer is government intervention combined with public education. Fatty foods need to be more expensive, and people need to be more active. The excess of caloric input that is making everyone overweight is actually not that much, but it adds up over time .. I believe it can be done.

EDIT: And those arguments of overeating to counteract negative psychological problems making it 'not their fault' .. puuuuleeeeese. Exercise produces a natural high and boosts self-esteem .. so why don't they exercise? BECAUSE THEY ARE FUCKING LAZY. I accept that people are lazy and are not going to change, but please don't mask the true cause.

As for the 'glandular problems' .. again .. why don't those people balance their caloric intake to such a level that it doesn't get turned into fat? The simple fact is that you need a certain amount of calories to exist. Are you saying these people's fat production mechanism would steal calories from essential bodily functions and they would die? Put these people in a prison cell for 6 months and feed them 1500 calories per day and I guarantee they would lose the weight.

You could apply those same arguments to blacks, though; high crime rate; high bastardy rate; high unemployment rate, high incarceration rate, rampant drug and alcohol use... and they oftentimes smell pretty fucking disgusting as well; they tend to be loud and overtly violent... these are both socially and financially detrimental factors.
yeah, yeah.. it's not their fault, it's dat Evil White man... the po' little angels are just lashing out, they don't mean no harm, he a good boy, blah blah... Please.
At what point does an inkling of personal responsibility kick in? Are we to be forever burdened with this fucking problem?

And don't even dare talk to me about poverty or being unfair to these fucking criminals; I grew up in poverty, a bag of potatoes for a family of five had to last most of a week, or a big sack of lima beans (I beleive I expressed my utter hatred for those things in another thread once) and when a coupla slices of bolgna between wonder bread with mustard came around with some Ruffles, it was a big fucking deal, so don't EVEN condescend to me about that crap. I left home at 16 because the situation was unbearable, living in the slummiest downtown motels you can imagine, doing odd manual labor until heading north and getting a job in construction. I didn't get to go to Big U and study the classics or Philosophy, I never even got to finish High School.
As for having a little sympathy for the black bastards: I grew up in neighborhoods and schools that were anywhere between 35 -60% black, so I know what the fuck I am talking about. Whites, racist?
I have never ever seen a group more outwardly racist and hateful than blacks towards whites, at least when they have the safety of numbers.
Don't believe me? Take a walk downtown Detroit or Los Angeles or Chicago on a Saturday night with your girfriend, I dare you.
I've probabaly seen and experienced more violence in a week than any of you here will see or experience in a lifetime.
So do NOT even lecture me on race relations in America.
I never robbed raped or murdered anyone, so that theory is bullshit, as well.
It's an excuse, is all.

Oh, so you're a doctor, are you?
And why are other peoples eating habits any of your damned business, anyway?
I hate smokers; they stink, they are costly in terms of insurance and they are weaklings that cannot control themsleves, they are always coghing up nasty shit from their lungs, etc...

I'm pretty big on personal responsibility, so I don't think the government coming in and telling you what you should and shouldn't eat is a good route to go on. Like c.o.t.b. said, it's not anyone else's business what people decide eat. If they have a crappy diet, that's their problem.

So are most Americans, but it doesn't really work in practise.

They already do that. It's called the USDA Food Pyramid. Too bad nobody follows it. And gov't intervention doesn't just mean 'telling people what to do'. It means funding bike pathways, community fitness centres, giving tax breaks for enrolling in sports, etc.

Also, it's not necessarily a matter of what you eat .. it's a matter of balancing calories in with calories out. You can eat whatever you want really. Overall just saying how the obesity epidemic could be combatted if people so desired to look at fewer big butts during the day.

Other than that .. welcome to Wall-E World. Enjoy your stay.

Well, it's not so much that the government needs to regulate people's diets, but rather that the FDA needs to have higher standards for our food than we currently do. Every animal is doped up to make it grow faster and we could be doing a lot more to make our food healthier. I don't think Europeans are so much healthier because they exercise more or consciously choose to have better diets...it's a combination of better healthcare and that the food is simply healthier all-around. Hell, we're the country that's so fixated on exercise and looking good...plus the Euro's smoke cigarettes like fuck. So how else can they be so much healthier than us?

These are good points. As for the FDA, that is a perfectly fine instance where a gov. agency should intervene, but, they are probably just as corrupt as the rest of them.
And, let's face it, eating healthy is a lot more expensive than eating non-healthy. But, according to some, it's nothing more than laziness and gluttony; while that is definitely the case sometimes, it is no way the case all of the time.

And, really alcohol consumption, smoking... these are far more detrimental in terms of effects on society than obesity.

One other thing; I used the overweight thing as an example of how people will excuse certain personal prejudices whilst denouncing others, based on their personal worldview.

A very superficial analysis.
Not everybody has the luxury of time to workout consistently, so saying calories in vs. calories out is not always an option. Some do not have the time or the money to eat healthy and so on, so again, not so cut and dried.

What vices do you engage in, if I might ask?
And be honest.

1) What practice? There's not much to be put into practice; you are responsible for your actions. That's it.

2) The Food Pyramid is more of a guideline than anything. And bike paths and fitness centers are all well and good, but just because you build them doesn't necessarily mean that fat people will use them.

3) I can't really say how to best combat the obesity problem. Educating people on healthier diets wouldn't hurt. I'm by no means an expert on the subject, so I can't say for sure.

And I haven't seen Wall-E.

Correct, but then an unsuperficial analysis would mean writing a book, which I don't have the time to do.

Why turn it personal?

Eating fatty foods is different from other 'vices' because you can counteract it with excercise.

What was personal? You pass judgement on a group for their vices, I was just asking which vices you engage in.

I am truly amazed at how selective the rationale of some here is.
"Well, the vices I don't like are different than the ones I do"...

Jesus.

Let's look at it from another perspective:
I am personally very health conscious, always have been; eat good foods, workout more than I really should (moderate weights 3-4 times a week, a lot of heavy bag work for cardio conditioning... I have quite a nice little gym set up in my garage; another point: exercise equipment can be costly), now, I have seen pictures of, lets, say Zad. Now, he doesn't look like he has ever been inside a gym, but who am I to judge him for it?
Not grinding on Zad, just using him as an example, since he has mentioned more than once his disdain for overweight people.
Well, to people like myself, I could just as easily pull a Hans and Franz, and laugh at his softness.
I mean we are talking about "laziness" in regard to physical fitness, aren't we?
How about you, General? Do you look like you just swept down from Mt. Olympus?

Like I said, it was an argument about how to combat obesity (not whether it's good or bad), and you are now asking others about their vices, presumably to make the argument personal (I can't think of any other reason in this context) as in 'you have vices so why are you bothering to criticize others'.

And I am a healthy person BTW. Everything is taken in moderation including exercise.

sounds awfully judgemental to me.
If you cannot see why me wondering what personal vices you may have after looking down your nose at other peoples vices, than whatever.
And you don't really understand much about metabolism, apparently; a person with fucked glands and metabolism will gain weight no matter what they eat. How do you explain skinny people that can eat like a pig without gaining weight?
And just who the fuck are you to tell people they should starve themselves because you don't find their appearance appealing?

And besides, I shared my less than glamorous background, I mean I admitted I never even finished High School, regarding my views on things, why can't you answer a personal question?

Again, you are using extreme examples. Overweight is simply being at an unhealthy weight, it doesn't mean being the pinnacle of health. I can see you again want to say 'how dare you criticize others when you yourself are not in perfect shape'? I am not a fitness god, I am merely reasonably healthy.

Excercise equipment? Who needs that. You can do plenty of cardio in your living room.

And laziness could also mean cooking as opposed to buying some fast food or something packaged. The community garden initiatives going on in some inner cities is a promising sign in that direction.

If they don't exercise at all, sure. Again you ignore the other side of the equation.

But then again, I haven't seen any data from you on what exactly the metabolically challenged consume and how many calories they burn, or what percentage of the population they represent.

But whatever. I'm talking about the obesity epidemic and you are using minority examples.
