Kubrick is all about the slow burn. He's the master of it.

Barry Lyndon is completely epic. Completely brilliant.

I agree with you guys of course, but I can see why Trapt and Noodles have trouble with 2001 and Barry Lyndon. When you talk about "slow burn", those two are basically the slowest of the slow burns.

Only seen a few Kubrick films but 2001 is in my top 10. The Shining is great too.

Yeah, I suppose I can see that. But at the same time, "slow" is relative. I mean, there may not necessarily be action, but both 2001 and Barry Lyndon, in my opinion are more than interesting enough to hold your attention throughout.

Then again, I have a thing for really long movies, as long as it's done well. For example, Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (229 minutes) is basically like a four hour orgasm for me. It's also why I love Tarkosvsky films so much. There's just something about getting the slow burn just right that tickles me in all the right places.

EDIT: not to mention Godfather Part II....!

No shit! And yeah you do like slow burns. Ranking of Tarkovsky films?

I've only seen Stalker and Solaris, liked both but slightly preferred the latter.

Yeah, Solaris is my favourite because I can be a total sci-fi nerd sometimes, and I actually read the novel when I was a kid before I ever saw the movie, and then the film was my first Tarkovsky so it has a special place for me.

Then probably Andrei Rublev, because it's just a masterful piece of film craft, and so epic in scope. Just one of those movies that sticks with you for so long.

Stalker next, which is by far his most "difficult" film out of the three i've seen, but also perhaps his most ambitious and maybe even his most infuential. It can totally turn you off if you're in the wrong mood for it (a little weed helps!).

The separation between the three is pretty superficial though, as on certain days they could all be my favourite.

Those are the only three I've seen, but I own them all and have enjoyed them many times. I always keep meaning to explore the rest but I don't get around to it for whatever reason.

Thanks for the info, Rublev was my next choice. And Stalker is an incredibly difficult view, agreed, but also sort of exhilarating at the same time. Eventually the viewer becomes aware that the journey is the destination and perhaps it is only natural to feel a bit let down. At the same time, the long shot of the rain falling through the ceiling in the climatic scene somehow is deeply resonant anyway.

Stoker - Great direction, lovely film visually, but lacks a bit in terms of the actual plot. Certainly not up to Oldboy. But very good despite that. Changed my opinion several times since watching it, which is always a sign of a decent film...

Last Exorcism: Part II. Even the title is fucking stupid. Went with a friend who likes these kind of movies; I was opting for the Die Hard sequel or Warm Bodies, the latter was way too late in the afternoon. Movie used rather standard creepy effects. Wasn't even that scary. Made little sense. Was pretty thin in terms of a plot although it had one, maybe if I had seen the first film. Best part of the film: a John Dyer Baizley painting (I believe the latest Blacktusk album) was on the alternative chick's wall and was shown in several scenes.

Silver Linings Playbook - Yeah we get it, sports make you a violent lunatic and dancing makes you sleep and get laid. Good music. Tiffany was hot as fuck and Nikki seemed like a bitch. The glue showed after the football game fight and so it totally lost me for about 15 minutes but overall I liked it. super dramatic ads for Dove and Becel in the trailers weirded me out.

Fuck all that.
Evil Dead remake hits theaters next month (no delusions of it living up to the original's brilliance, but I'm still fucking stoked about it).

I've read that it's quite brutal.

As is the new Elijah Wood movie Maniac. Anybody know that one?

+1. It looks awesome. And that box cutter tongue scene is awful.

Yeah, will be going to see that with low expectations, so hoping to be pleased.

Step Across the Border - Mostly clips of Fred Frith playing music and miscellaneous scenery. Interviews are interesting and in cool locations. Very good and inspiring documentary, recommended if you like music.

Vertigo. Interesting. Dated. Saw the twist a mile away. Awkward Freud bits laced throughout. Super smart directing. Neat camera usage in the first half of the film. Clunky.

Evil Dead (remake) then Evil Dead (original)

My friend had never seen the original so we made it our goal to watch it with the new one still fresh in our minds.

As far as remakes go, this is a good one. There is a scene where Slayers Raining Blood would be absolutely perfect but they missed an opportunity there.
