Post subject:  New Korpiklaani...wtf

I found this in Korpiklaani forum today...

Quote:
We have been in the studio again every now and then since last spring, and we have more material ready than is needed for an entire album. It is already mixed and ready.

The album became quite long, but we just could not drop any of the 14 songs. It was already hard to decide which songs would become bonus tracks.

So, we offer to you 14 new songs plus 2 bonus tracks on our upcoming album 'Korven Kuningas', which means 'King of the Woods'

This time the album cover will be painted, not photoshopped. The old man "Vaari" will be figuring on the cover again, so it will look familiar and faithful to everyone, even though a different technique is used.

The moment i've read this i was like

I don't know what to make of this. Its been six months since Tervaskanto was released. Should I be happy that new material is coming out or worried that it comes so quick after the last one.

Every album has been more or less the same.

How many mutually interchangeable albums do they need to make before they come up with something fresh? It's even worse than Darkthrone's trudgery between Transilvanian Hunger and The Cult is Alive.

If it bothers you so much don't listen. There aren't that many folk metal bands or bands that sound like Korpiklaani to say you've had enough. If we were talking about some power metal band, copying of from Helloween or Stratovarius and releasing 3 albums of the same music then that would be bad. I'm a fan of the band so it doesn't bother me as much as you apparently, though I don't think they are doing exactly the same thing in each album.

I'm a fan too, I just have Voice of Wilderness and what I've heard of other albums sounds so similar I don't bother. I only like them on stage, really.

And perhaps there aren't many bands that sound exactly like Korpiklaani, but that's not a valid reason for them to balance their uniqueness out with a shitload of identical albums. Folk metal is a trend for the moment, and Korpiklaani are riding the band wagon - it doesn't matter if they're driving the wagon or lying in the trunk, to me it seems they're taking advantage of the trend, and while part of me thinks they should as it's neat for them, another part of me dislikes the way they're establishing their notoriety through album attrition.

I hope I was coherent enough, as I just came back from a cantus. But there you have my view on it.

I was trying to come up with something to continue the argument but it is impossible. What you said is a fact and even if they are riding the trend wave for profit and publicity i'm happy for them because it may not last long. Now, it all comes down to the question whether a band that have found their sound should stick with it for as long as possible or should they risk and change for good or bad. There are plenty of examples of successful bands changing their established sound to please either record companies, fans or themselves in playing something different (Sonata Arctica is a prime example of this). Amon Amarth for instance, a band I like very much, haven't released anything new since The Crusher yet their latest is my favourite from them. I put Korpiklaani in the same category as AA. So you see, I don't need them to change at all but I still agree with you. I just don't let something like this to ruin my enjoyment.

So there you have my view on it.
