Lately, I've been listening to Slint's Spiderland a lot. I definitely recommend that album to anyone who's into post-rock and wants to hear a taste of where it all started.

Hmm I'm listening to the new Grails album now and it's amazing. I saw them open for Neurosis and they were great, but none of their albums had any of the build-up drive that whatever they played live was, but as it turns out it was stuff from their new album

It's also not really post rock, but I can see fans of PR totally loving it.

If anyone still bothers to count Isis as anything approaching post-rock, their new album is like melting chocolate and pouring it into your ears with a funnel, by which I mean it is a veritable eargasm.

I felt there should be one. I'll start kicking in with a few bands that I recently got recommended: Helios The American Dollar Pg.Lost What do you see as the future of post-rock, or is it dead?

All I know about post rock is that Pelican, Red Sparowes, Godspeed... and Russian Circles rock my tiny brain. Am I 1337? Or 14/\/\3? I suspect I may like Explosions in the Sky too, based on the one or two songs I have heard.

I really like some bands from this genre, but I'm still listening to a lot of the "staples", and I really haven't gotten to the point of looking for some of the lesser known acts yet... I haven't even heard of the three bands Misha listed, though I will certainly check them out. I really like GY!BE and Pelican. Those were my introduction to the genre. With GY!BE, f# a# (infinity) is easily my favorite release. That is one of those albums that has me from the first sounds to the last. The EP and Skinny Fists are probably tied for next but still really good. The last album they released is really the only one that I never got into. I've listened just a little bit to A Silver Mt. Zion, but I'm not really into it. ... As for Pelican, I like Australasia and especially The Fire In Our Throats... I'm not sure what I think of City of Echoes, but thus far, I have to say it's a disappointment to me. Although much of the playing is nice (the drums are something I've really enjoyed in all their releases) it seems like some of the "deeper"dynamics of the music are gone now. :( Lately, I've been listening to Slint's Spiderland a lot. I've also been wanting to get some M83, but I don't really know where to start... any recommendations? Oh, and Explosions In the Sky is nice too. I find that post-rock tends to get old after 3-4 songs by one band since the tense part/climax/come-down thing... So i've never really explored it beyond Red Sparowes/Russian Circles/Mogwai/Godspeed (I've heard some of the other ones but they didn't impress me much). I think the genre is in need of something new, which a few bands bring to the table - Irepress and Russian Circles are the main names that come to mind, but they still suffer from the stigma of being kind of samey after a few songs.

If you haven't heard the self-titled mini-CD, with the amazing insrumental Glenn, I highly recommend it. As far as newer stuff not mentioned, I've liked what I've heard from A Silver Mt Zion and Esmerine.

I have the same problem with post-rock, there is just too many bands that do the same thing. GY!BE, Slint, Pelican, Sigur Rós etc have pioneered the genre in one way or another, but most of it is all the same. M83 is really worth it by the way, it's diverse and uses more structures. I also recommend the latest As The Poets Affirm, because of the elements they use from other genres. Good catch on CocoRosie, it's great uhm.... well it's great (Dark Cabaret I think).

GYBE, pelican, red sparrowes and all that usual stuff... I used to listen like insane but I dunno, it got lost on me in time. And I haven't heard any new shit either. Pelican - Echoes isn't what I expected it to be. I think this genre is dead for me, at least until I hear something mindblowing.

Sorry, based on what he (Radagast) said, I wasn't sure if the actual title had been mentioned in the thread or not, but I had actually listed the title earlier when I said what I thought of the album, so I guess there wasn't really any point in saying that. And I haven't really been able to check out any of the other bands mentioned here that I want to yet, but hopefully this weekend... -Tyrion

After 3 or 4 more listens my obsession with Burning Off Impurities continues, definitely check this out of if you want cool atmospheric instrumental music.

I'm scared to listen to it, because a lot of people are bashing it. But by your delicious description, I may just give it a shot. Would you say it's better than Panopticon?
