Where do we put folk metal? Are Mastodon to go with the prog stuff?

Also: Non-metal stuff like Russian Circles that fits in neither of these categories?

I think all of those could go in the avant-garde thread, except for Russian Circles, which probably belongs in the alt-rock/metal thread.

I think Mastodon should go in the Avant-Garde metalcore thread. In fact, they're kind of like avant-garde metalcore, right?

They could go in either avant-garde or prog, most likely avant-garde. However, they are in no way shape or form metalcore, at least not on the newest album.

I'd say they're alt-metal/rock :P

I don't like them much, so you could be right. I know they're not like typical metalcore bands, but the whole screaming thing made me think they could be like sludgey metalcore or something. I don't hear any prog, though.

The new album has very little screaming, and there are definitely elements of prog, but I'd still put them in the avant-garde section.

Most people here have no clue what avant-garde is.

Noted.

And, as I've said numerous times, the avant-garde voting thread is being used as a catch-all for albums that don't fit well in any other genre. That doesn't mean they'll all be correct, though. Avant-Garde is experimental and pushes boundaries, at least by my definition. So, if an album is tough to categorize, it has to be just a bit experimental.

I've always thought of progressive as mixing genres and gently pushing the boundaries of music while avant-garde is just going head first into the realms of fucked up.

Yeah, something like that. Progressive usually means that it's not extremely hard to digest, that's why you find the term avant-garde mostly in classical music and jazz. There is still a lot of music that would fit the category in instrumentally heavier music, such as this:

At Rada and Ness: stop whining, you'd say the same thing if I thought Cellador to be hairmetal.

My point is I know exactly what avant-garde is (impossible!), but as Adam has said the voting thread, for better or worse, is being used as a catch all. But any excuse, right?

Ah, then we sort of agree.

Converge shouldnt be put in the metalcore section! It's more like post-hardcore/screamo so it would fit more in the avant-garde section.. IMO
