I read this review of their EP and I'm intrigued (mostly by the Tool/Mars Volta/Jeff Buckley comparisons). Anyone heard them/are they worth checking out?

Quote:
Double Blind Music presents Opus Dai's Actum Procul, a limited edition five-song EP, recorded live at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood. The EP captures the power of Opus Dai's live show and reveals a band that cultivates a rich and varied aural landscape - a place where diverse sounds blend into a singular musical force.

Actum Procul, which is available exclusively online and at Opus Dai shows, features stunning live performances of "Rain," "Step Up," "Bella Christa," and "Frontline," as well as rare acoustic song "Best Regards." The album paves the way for their debut full-length, which will be out on Double Blind in early 2006.

Driving and aggressive yet gentle in spirit, an epic and graceful warmth stokes the fires that burn brightly for Opus Dai. Drawing on influences from Led Zeppelin and Jeff Buckley to Tool and The Mars Volta, Opus Dai weave a broad musical tapestry. The superlative musicianship and beautifully crafted songs are the hallmark of this newly formed yet years-in-the-making band.

Like individual rivulets of water edging their way to a common sea, the history of Opus Dai is a journey that begun several years ago with the formation of L.A.'s noted multi-ethnic, world music-influenced O.H.M. With diverse cultural backgrounds and inspirations, the four members of Opus Dai rose from the ashes of O.H.M. to meet at a common center. Distorted Hendrix-like guitars exist alongside soaring vocals and urgent drums to create a potent mix of melody and ferocity.

They're very good. They remind me of Dredg, or A Perfect Circle, 10 Years, even Alien Ant Farm at times, and a more structured Mars Volta. You'd probably really dig 'em.

If you end up diggin' this, check out O.H.M., essentially the same band under a different name, and a bit heavier.

I bought the album this morning because it was like 8$ used. Its pretty good, they sort of remind me of Atomship because both bands are sort of proggy hard rock with a strange-accented vocalist. There needs to be more bands with great vocalists like the guys from Dredg or Katatonia but also with the complex instrument playing of Atomship/Opus Dai >_<
