Ok, I've had new metal, I've had folk... now for some neo-classical stuff. I'm looking for stuff in the vein of Yngwie Malmsteen, At Vance and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. What can you guys with your extended knowledge recommend? (remember I get hardly any broadcasting here. No magazines, no tv channels, nothing)

Windham Hell - "South Facing Epitaph" Avant-garde neo-classical metal. Very dark stuff.

new classical would be Terry Riley, Pierre Boulez, Olivier Messaien, Edgard Varese, Steve Reich, Karl-Heinz Stockausen, Philip Glass etc... not the bunch of suckers you quoted !

Isildurs Bane are probably one of my favourite neoclassical bands, although they're a lot more proggy & atmosphere based than Yngwie or Trans Siberian..

Yes, "new classical" and "neo classical" are very different things. Stockhausen and Messaien are the former, but definitely not the latter, if I remember the college module I did on 20th century music (that's a big "if", mind you...).

And "neo-classical metal" is a third different thing, which I know even less about.

How about Winds? "The Imaginary Direction Of Time" is sweet.

Jason Becker is pretty cool as far as neoclassical guitar goes.

Or Arcturus if you want something really weird.

Virtuocity's Secret Visions is my favo(u)rite neo-classical metal album. I like especially it's oriental flavour.

Time Requiem's Inner Circle of Reality is also worth a try. It's more in the vein of prog-power metal, but the singer has balls.

It's a shame he isn't in the band anymore. He's now in Firewind.
