AKA OLD SCHOOL EXPERIMENTAL VS. NEW SCHOOL EXPERIMENTAL...
yeah I know it could have been Van der Graaf Generator or Henry Cow or Can or [name a notable band I forgot] VS. many other new experime(n)tal ( ) bands but I find Garm & Fripp to have a lot of things in common (for example the constant need of evolution they put in their various projects) if not the technicality (in which Ulver is certainly no match to King Crimson)...

anyway... discuss & vote !

haha, you know, if I absolutely had to pick my three favourite bands ever, the list would look like this:

1) King Crimson
2) Black Sabbath
3) Ulver

so the gold medal goes to King Crimson, probably by virtue of them having inspired or paved the way for more bands I like. Garm impresses me more currently but there's no way he can contend with Larks' Tongues.. 8)

It's getting kinda close to Crimso's 40th anniversary, I hope they make it.

In ignorance I'll vote for Ulver. Never listned to King Crimson, can't imagine them being better than Ulver though, :)

maybe you should try Red by King Crimson

NP
King Crimson "In The Court of the Crimson King" (one of the very first prog album... and still a classic !)

depends which era you check out. their first four are progressive jazz-rock. the next three are prog's best works, pwning all the symph-prog ever recorded. the three after that are some sort of mathematic new-wave, kind of the suck. the current era is very peculiar math-rock, a total study of texture and rhythm. Tool rip off this era :P

that probably doesn't help. maybe checking out THRAK or Red would be more useful than my vague explanation.

I need to get some King Crimson and some new Ulver before I can decide.

I'll vote Ulver, even though I like KC. Still not bought Lizard!

I'll go with King Crimson since the only Ulver that's any good are the first three albums.

Though I am glad to hear lizardtail say it, because I've always felt this way, 80's King Crimson sucked.

Ulver. I'm not as big a fan of jazz- and math-metal, and I like the dreamy quality of Blood Inside.

I'll easily go with King Crimson over Ulver's post-black phase. Throw in the black and it becomes much more difficult.

I'm quite relieved that Lizard doesn't think much of 80s KC, because I never got into albums like Discipline and Beat much. My favorite KC have always been In the Court, Larks Tongue, Starless, and Red.

Blood Inside is a great album, but King Crimson is the simple choice for this poll. Those in this thread who have never heard them and like prog are doing themselves a great disservice. :)

yep, you're right. I think that a lot of King Crimson's legacy lingers in metal 8)
