what's the definition of this genre? it seems fuzzy and vague.

you have commercial sounding stoner rock like Spiritual Beggars, Grand Magus and Abdullah, then goofy alt.rock like QotSA and Oxbow, and then you have really raw, sandblasting hard rock like Boris and Ramesses. lastly you have bands like Sleep, YOB and Ocean Chief making huge songs under the "stoner doom" banner.

so which came first? is this the case of people shifting borders so they can claim that their favourite bands are stoner?

Well, I think that if you use a different suffix it alters the meaning drastically. It's like "Gothic": "Gothic Metal" and "Gothic Rock" are totally different. It's the same with Stoner Doom and Stoner Rock.

I suppose the only thing word "stoner" will always imply whatever the context is an affinity with druggy hard rock/blues influences. I'm sure you could probably traces all their influences back to Black Sabbath pretty directly as well.

I'd say Black Sabbath.

Saint Vitus is another great old school Stoner Doom band.

the psyche/pop side of 70's Black Sabbath + a more modern sound = Queens of the Stone Age

every other bands adapt that formula with more or less psychedelism/popisms...

as for the moderators, I think they should move this thread to the alt. section of MR forums... wait ! the very moderator of this forum posted it !!!

I agree... I'll move this.

Although there's some Stonerish Doom like Electric Wizard.

if you ignore the Kyuss and QotSA crap then stoner fits well alongside doom..

Hey, don't slam Kyuss and QOTSA!

Anyway, "Stoner" is basically "drug induced psychadelic rock/metal." Black Sabbath is a no brainer (odd since they're also often credited as the first actual metal band - so I guess the first genre of metal must have been "stoner metal"). Blue Oyster Cult was another pioneer in the whole stoner genre. And then there are more recent bands like The Screaming Trees, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, etc.

Tool and even Nevermore also have their share of stoner influences.

I think he meant you can hear BOC & Black Sabbath's influence in Nevermore's music which is kind of accurate if not too obvious...

Okay then. I don't hear much Sabbath in Nevermore, tho.

They use the detuned guitars and somewhat sludgey sound Sabbath tends to use. Warrel Dane's vocals also have that drugged out sound at times.
