Is anyone a fan of funk or the proper, intended genre of R&B? Maybe even fusion? I'm trying to get into these sorts of music but I don't really have any starting points.. I'm looking for mostly instrumental stuff, grooves rather than big band tunes, strong rhythms and music which gives each musician room to breath, rather than "songs". those sorts of things.

can anyone recommend a good place to start looking? please don't say george clinton.

not a fan but I like some Stax stuff (Otis, Sam & Dave), some 70's Stevie Wonder, some Funkadelic/Parliament, etc...

I generally love the bass lines in 70's funk :roll:

You can't go wrong with Stevie Wonder!Try Talking Book(72),Innervisions(73),Songs in the Key of Life(76)!His new album(A Time 2 Love) is also a good surprise.

Then you have to try Prince!amazing guy!These are some of his best works:Sign'o'the Times(87),Lovesexy(88),Diamonds & Pearls(91),Gold Experience(95),the amazing Rainbow Children(01),and of course Purple Rain(84) which is more rock than funk.

Lizardtail are you into Bitches Brew era Miles Davis? If you're not familiar I suspect it may be something you'd get a lot out of. It's Jazz/Rock fusion, but very dark and sounds almost apocalyptic sometimes.

For instrumental funk, I think the best place to start is Herbie Hancock's Headhunters.

Thanks for the suggestions! I know all these names, it amazes me that I haven't before thought to sample any of their work..
