| Post subject: | The Smiths? |
Was recently impressed with the winding, labyrinthine song structure of 'How Soon is Now?' To people familiar with the band: how typical is this track compared to the rest of the catalog? If this song was an anomaly and they usually wrote standard pop songs I'd like to know, thanks. |

The Queen is dead and Meat is murder are their best, from what I've heard from their other albums they have good sordid tracks but nothing as great as those two albums. |

I'm quite late to the party but i'll give my input anyhow. First let me start by saying that I've gotten into the Smiths in during the last two years so I'm definitely not an expert, but I do own their whole catalog of LP albums. The Smiths is a band I enjoy immensely, but some of their albums tend to be uneven. IMO, their masterpiece is The Queen is Dead. It's flawless and contains some of their best tracks such as Bigmouth strikes again, There is a Light That never goes out, Cemetry Gates and The boy with a thorn in is side. Murder is meat is fine but I don't find myself going to that album as much as "Strangeways, Here we come", which I consider their second best because of it's refined sound and fuller production. The perfect example of this would be the astonishing track "Girlfriend in a Coma" which has the trademark lyrics of Morissey, and a great guitar melody by Johnny Marr. The sound heard on Strangeways was highly influential on today's indie rock bands. Don't get me wrong, their whole catalog has been influential but none more than Strangeways due to it's polished production and sound (The Smiths sound at it's most refined), which is diametrically opposite to most of their first albums which were quite raw . As for "How Soon is Now ?" there is nothing quite like it in their whole catalog so it's definitely an exception. |
