Now that somebody brought them up, I thought I'd ask whether anybody here likes them. Also, is Smash a recommended buy (I plan on getting it sometime next month)?

Awful, talentless, mainstream punk rock.

I personally don't care for them anymore, but I did have Smash when I was in 8th grade, and I loved it.

I would say if you like them, Smash is a must purchase.

Their old stuff is good, but after they released Americana they only deserve to be tortured and burned alive.

I listened to one song back when I was in 7th grade. I don't remember what it was called, but it started off with "YA, YA, YA, YA." I would play it on my portable cd player when I would run my paper route. I liked it b/c it was fast, and I would get my route done quicker. Imagine if Dragonforce was around then.

This is about right.

Their old stuff is excellent though, IMO.

Sounds like "ALl I Want". Excellent song. Pisses on Green Day!

I liked some of their stuff when I was younger. Even then I could see that they never did a single entirely good album.

What the fuck was that recent single all about? The one with the 'hilarious' synth.

Oh dear god please let us never speak of their recent singles ever again.

However, I would say that there is not one weak track on Self Titled and Ixnay combined.

It's funny how word "mainstream" is somehow bad. The Offspring didn't change anything to become "mainstream," it just happened!

The Offspring are excellent! All their CDs are great! They do have a few goofy songs here and there, and those always seem to be the hit songs, but whatever. Overall they're a great band!

You'll hardly get any objective opinions on a messageboard with a bunch of metalheads, so I'd suggest you sample them first.

They were my favorite band once. I was a big pop-punk fan some yeard ago. It's still quite good (I guess Offspring anf Green Day are some of my "guilty pleasures" ) although it's been overrun by crap like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan the last years.

Those are the songs by them that you really shouldn't use to judge the band. They're not that kind of a band, but labels almost demand songs like that for singles. I guess you can argue that the band shouldn't then write that song, but everyone here who is in a band knows that they would write that goofy song if the label requested it, especially if you wanted to make a living doing music and that goofy song wasn't too different from your regular shit. Basically write some stupid lyrics instead of serious ones is what it comes down to.

I'm not saying The Offspring have done this, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. The point is, don't judge the band on the goofy singles. :D

The Offspring were an honest punk rock band from L.A.

they release a good debut but nothing memorable... their second opus, the very well titled Ignition was a mind blowing punk pop outfit... then came success with an honest third effort, Smash , not their best but certainly a good album... unlike Inxay on the Hombre (fourth album) which was a more ambitious project but couldn't match the efficiency of their 2 previous albums... this album, their first as a major act, was also a commercial disappointment...

so what did The Offspring to regain major audiences ? they turned their quality band into a Mtv teenage farce to the point they became a shame to their original scene... now they play big audiences, sell a shitload of albums but also lost all musical credibility, that's what I call SELLING OUT

What I have to wonder is just how Smash became so popular in the first place. I was an independent release, so it obviously never got any initial MTV/radio airplay. So what was it that made the album such a runaway success?

It has a few really, really catchy songs on it. "Come out and play" did for Smash what "Pretty Fly" did for Americana.

I notice they tried to repeat the formula again with "Come out Swinging", nut this just sucked really.

Anyhoo, I still think Ixnay eclipses Smash, and is one of mainstream rocks most unfairly maligned records.

That's the only song by them I like, strange person I am.
