Atlanta-based heavy rock masters MASTODON have confirmed details behind their upcoming Reprise Records album scheduled for release in early 2009.
The seven-song strong, 50 minute tour de force entitled CRACK THE SKYE, was recorded at Southern Track Studios in Atlanta and produced/mixed by Brendan O’Brien (Rage Against The Machine, Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, etc.). CRACK THE SKYE follows their massively acclaimed 2006 epic BLOOD MOUNTAIN, which was voted the #9 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Top 50 Album’s of 2007” and the #1 album of The Year in Decibel Magazine. Greater accolades were bestowed upon them last year when MASTODON were named “Best Metal Band” in Rolling Stone Magazine’s Annual poll, and “Best Band On The Planet” by the UK’s Kerrang! Magazine.

Tracklisting for CRACK THE SKYE is as follows:

1. Oblivion
2. Divinations
3. Quintessence
4. The Czar
(I) Usurper
(II) Escape
(III) Martyr
(IV) Spiral
5. Ghost of Karelia
6. Crack The Skye
7. The Last Baron

As with each of their previous releases, the packaging for the new album will be as bold and breathtaking and the music contained within. Multiple packaging formats are expected. Details to be revealed in the near future.

4-part song makes me very intrigued. Have they gone full on prog on us?

Awesome!

What'd you reckon they are going to do after this one seeing as the four elements theme will have run dry?

In a recent interview with MetalSucks, MASTODON bassist/singer Troy Sanders stated about the group's forthcoming album, "I think most of our new material is going to be more under the rock category, but it's pretty epic and involved, extremely layered, broad, melodic, dark, and creepy. When we met up with [producere] Brendan [O'Brien], he had heard some of our demos and he liked some of the rock elements that we had with our stuff. We told him that we were interested in recording, quote, 'a classic rock record that will hopefully have a long shelf life and have solid songs from start to finish, and that will live a lot longer than just listening to it a few times and shelving it.' Our favorite records of all time that we always constantly revisit in our own collection are by bands like JOURNEY, YES, KING CRIMSON, FRANK ZAPPA, KANSAS, and all the shit that we grew up with and were inspired by and continue to revisit. We kind of wanted to attempt to capture a record like that, [at least] in our eyes and ears. The stars had aligned perfectly because Brendan's a perfect match, a funny dude and a great musician who has an amazing ear. He can pick out little things that we can try to do that we hadn't even thought of before, whether it be vocally or sonically with the guitars or something. So it is going to be more of a rock kind of Count Chocula-meets-DEEP PURPLE thing. That's kind of what we're saying."

A rock album? that makes me a little nervous.

But Mastodon are one of my favorite bands, I trust them to kick ass. This looks sweet.

For some reason, I just never really got into Mastodon. I own Leviathan, which is okay. Nothing I actively listen to, though.

I'm sure I'll rush out and get it the day it comes out, but I'm not getting my hopes up for anything earth-shattering, especially with the news that it's apparently going to be a lot less heavy than previous releases. I've always liked Mastodon ever since I heard Leviathan for the first time, but they've never been one of my absolute favorite bands. For some reason the drumming annoys me.

You best be joking.

no sir

I realize he's insanely good, but... well... aren't drums supposed to carry a beat? He kind of goes a bit beyond that. It's so over the top and rapid fire that I sometimes have a hard time figuring out what it is he's trying to do. It's like a perpetual drum solo, and it gets annoying after a while... at least to me.

It matches the music, methinks, in all its chaotic, prehistoric goodness.

I listened to Blood Mountain this morning and I realized I actually like the drumming in some songs (especially The Wolf Is Loose), and hate it in others... don't know why.

Brann is one of my favorite drummers. His style is just so over-the-top, I just love it.
