I was talking to my friends about this genre the other night. The only band I could name off the top of my head was Sun (((O))) or however it's written. What other drone bands are around?

Earth is a fucking amazing drone-ish band, way way better than Sunn.

Boris
Nadja
P.H.O.B.O.S
Skullflower
Ea
Moss
Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine
Wreck Of The Hesperus

Not all pure Drone, but all worth a listen.

Weird, I was just checking out drone bands like Sun O))) and Earth for the first time like five minutes ago. So yeah, I'm definitely going to be getting some Earth--they appealed to me a lot more than drum-less Sun O))).

On a side note, the cover art for The Bees Made Honey in the Lion Skull or whatever it's called is seriously some of the coolest I've ever seen.

EDIT: Where the hell can that Ea Taesse album be found? For purchase or download, I don't care...can't find it anywhere.

I got it from an American eBay shop... quite possibly Deathgasm Records', should be quite cheap - I think I ended up paying more for postage than I did for the album itself.

Heatseeker, I can send you a PM with a link for download for Ea Taesse. I have it on me. I just don't know how you would feel about not paying for it.

Lizardtail used to talk about Trollmanman av Ildtoppberg. You can hear all his stuff here.

Not my thing but he new his drone better than anyone else I can think of (aoart from maybe Adam) so they should be worth checking out.

It's kind of strange music. Not really metal at all, although there's definitely a Burzum influence.

Where is he nowadays anyway?

Am I right in thinking his name was Dee?

Yes, he has reviews here under that name.

He left and deleted all his email addresses/msn contacts/other miscellaneous internet accounts about two years ago and nobody has spoken to him since as far as I know. The more pessimistic amongst us thought he might have killed himself given that his "interests" on his profile listed "the fastest way of ending it all".

You're referring to drone metal. Drone is something different. It's a genre that's almost twice as old (originated in the late 50s).

Good old Drone was made by people/bands such as Phill Niblock, La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, Mirror and Nurse With Wound.

Difficult shit, honestly.

And I forgot to add that the records are very often even more limited than BM records. Releases by Bands such as Mirror and Nurse With Wound are often threathed as artworks rather than compositions, also by the bands, so nearly impossible to get.

Oooh good point well made... Although this kind of music is not really my kind of thing, it's definitely something lovers of drone-influenced metal should look into.

LaMonte Young used to live in a house in which a continuous tone played all day and all night, I think...

Yes, and I believe he also lived in a day/night rhythm of 30 hours or something (instead of 24), meaning that he sometimes lived at night and sometimes during the day. Weird fellow.

You should try some Angus MacLise! :)

Yeah, his Invasion Of Thunderbolt Pagoda is absolutely awesome. It's not exactly drone though, but minimalism it is.

It's not exactly drone but it has drone in it... And, indeed, it's a great piece of art...

I guess it's mostly a reaction of Maclise to go back to the early days of the Dream Syndicate. It diverted from this kind of music rather quickly in the mid 60s, to make more pure drone. Still this kind of Eternal Music is far more intersting (for me at least).
