Seems to me that TIE has been behaving oddly recently... indeed a bit more "aggressive" than usual.

Well, I bought this album two weeks ago. Overall, it's pretty good. Though I have to admit it almost seems like Green Day purposely wrote a political album just for the sake of writing one. And it's kind of odd seeing reviewers call it "An album for the generation" since, let's be honest, do most US teenagers (Green Day's target audience) know jack shit about politics?

For the record, it's weird seeing the same band who, just ten years earlier, wrote songs about masturbation and girls decide to write songs about the whole Bush regime. At least the Suicide Machines had some political relevance before trying their hand at an entirely politically charged album (SOS for example).

well it's maybe because this generation knows jack shit about politics that they made a political album... just an entertaining way to teach those kids a little... 8)

that is called growing up, that'll happen to you to some day...

Maybe its because ragging Bush sells more records than masturbation does these days?

implying GD are sell-outs ?

I think you've been misinformed, they don't need this to sell tons of records and fill up stadium audiences 8)

Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.

I don't know whether I'd consider THAT "growing up."

Either way, I know Green Day is probably well into their 30s by now so they can't be singing about girls and masturbation forever. Nonetheless, it's certainly quite a contrast. And they STILL have that little snot-nosed punky kid mentality.

I think the whole reason American Idiot became so popular is because there isn't much politically charged mainstream music. We're metal fans, so political lyrics are pretty commonplace for us. But for most mainstreamers, the common lyrics are love, sex and teen angst. So for alot of them, an album like American Idiot was totally new.

Maybe it's simply because 10 years ago they didn't care about politics. It happens. These guys aren't kids anymore. It's a great album either way. Still Green Day, so you know what to expect, but damn good either way.

The lyrics aren't what sold a shite-load of copies of this album, thats down to the catchy pop music.

Green Day writing a politicool album is just bandwagon jumping. With every tosser from Chris Martin to that stupid tart from the Black Eyed Peas suddenly becoming political experts it was inevitable. Cause, you know, punk is about rebellion. And selling £10 inflatable grenade-hearts at your £25 a ticket gigs.

Exactly. If not for Fat Mike and the whole PunkVoter thing, they'd never have done it...

Well, in their defense they've never had completely retarded lyrics. Even going back to Smoothed Out Slappy Hours their lyrics were fairly intelligent. They actually started showing a lot more maturity on Nimrod. On Warning they were much more mature, socio-political, as well. American Idiot's lyrics are not a bandwagon response, I don't think, but more of a sign of the times. People write about what influences them, politics have invaded everyones' lives during Bush's current reign.

I haven't weighed in on this debate before because I can see both sides. Green Day were a favorite of mine in my pre-metal days and I never really stopped liking them. I enjoyed AI for what it was,(particularly the 2 long tracks) but Warning remains my favorite of theirs. As Eyesore notes, Warning's lyrics were socio-political, and I think they were quite brilliant in places. One can argue that Green Day suck or cater to the mainstream excessively but I don't see AI as a bandwagon album.
