Many people have extolled the virtues of Between the Buried and Me so I checked out their album. IT SUCKS!! I couldn't stand the vocals at all. That guy sounded like a monkey vomiting up razor blades. The drummer was pretty good but the riffs got boring. FAST. By the fifth song, I couldn't tell the tracks apart anymore. Lucky I didn't review this 'cause I would have slammed it.

For once we agree. BTBAM is another band that I can't stop hearing about when I'm around the hardcore scene around here, or chatting it up on the magical internet. The vocals are awful all around, the melodic slow parts are meandering and border on just plain annoying, and the metal is generic.

Hmmm... not tryng to start a fight here, but didn't you level a whole slew of criticism towards me and "others" for using "cookie cutter" and "pseudo-criticisms" at SOAD?
Awful, meandering, boring, generic... not much different than what I said about SOAD...
Basically it all boils down to whether or not a band does the job for you or not.
V.

I was simply commenting on the impression they left on me, I never purported that post to be anything more than that. The difference between these two situations is that I am not going to sit here for pages upon pages and defend my post without adding anything to my argument. Obviously those terms are more or less subjective, but I can elaborate, since I actually have listened to the material in question.

If you really want to talk about the pros and cons of BTBAM then go ahead, if not then you made your point, but I still stand by what I said in the other thread. Not only did I accuse you of those things you mentioned, but my main problem was that I thought they were hopelessly off and without backing.

You haven't been into metal long have you? You know that the first metal bands were comprised entirely of clean singing, right?

Those bands you listed take their cues from older bands, and those bands usually had much better singers, and the people on this forum would probably be happy to recommend you some things to check out. Since you have a thing for singing, a few bands that you should check out for their use of both "dirty" and clean vocals and general ability to rock face would be:

Emperor
Strapping Young Lad
Edge of Sanity
Ephel Duath (Phormula though, not Painter's Palette)

All clean vocals:

Arcturus
Winds

Early Arcturus (their best work, IMO) actually employs little in the clean vocal catergory...
V.

You got me. I rarely mean anything other than the last two albums when I mention Arcturus. I far prefer the later stuff, even though Aspera is excellent and My Angel is ridiculously awesome, especially for it's time. I just hardly ever get around to listening to the first few things so they stay at the back of my mind.

Fair enough, but I also listened to SOAD and came to the conclusions I had drawn as a result of that....
aesthetics, or art or whatever you call it is extremely subjective... one mans art is another mans tripe.
perhaps my tone was a bit harsh in my critique of SOAD, but I really can;t stand them.
I hope getting off on the wrong foot in our introduction to each other is a thing of the past.

Yeah, Arcturus are ridiculously talented.

Sure man. I have no problems with you, I just get really into music discussion and have a tendency to rub people the wrong way, and similarly get easily fired up over things. It's all good.

Um, Valefor is pretty awesome too. His reviews and black metal rants are what got me interested in this site. Cheers to reconciliation.
