NEVER listen to metalheads talk shit about non-metal bands
What about punk kids? Don't forget to not listen to them either, because plenty of them would also disagree with you.
Many fans of traditional punk—Misfits, Black Flag, Discharge, Blitz, etc.—absolutely hate Green Day and bands of that sort, it doesn't mean it's bad music. That's the point.

Are you one of those guys who loves metal but flips out if anyone would ever consider you a metalhead, as if it somehow would undermine your ability to judge music more fairly than the primitives who don't agree with you?
Absolutely not. I am a metalhead, but I listen to a ton of different styles of music. My all-time favorite band is Def Leppard. Metal is what I listen to most, but it's not all I listen to.

As for the topic at hand, Green Day is one of those truly special groups. They are that rare modern rock band that is actually lame enough to end up being defended by old men, who end up telling off teenagers and getting all misty eyed comparing them to some other lame shit they used to listen to. It's really amazing. So TIE obviously has a point there, they have a tie to classic rock that allows them to bore fans of real punk and/or interesting rock music, while captivating people who still think Black Flag is too much to handle.
Someone can dislike a band, but they can also say "Good song, not my thing." Too many people think if they acknowledge something is good it has to mean they like it. It's like seeing a woman that is very pretty, but you're not attracted to her. By saying she is pretty, it doesn't mean you're attracted to her. You know?
