Incredible songwriter, terrible singer. But so are Dylan, Young, Cohen, Darnielle, and a lot of metal artists. You guys should be experts on getting past unorthodox/bad singing to find the music underneath. If anything just read any of the lyrics of Ys. Also she's a fantastic harpist. You can't call her untalented, even if you can't stand her voice.

Hm, I don't know, man, I never listened to Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen and felt my teeth starting to grind of their own accord. There's a difference between unconventional vocalists and just plain annoying ones - a lot of which is down to personal taste, true. As for her harping and lyrics, I couldn't really get past the vocals to concentrate on them. It's a shame, I have no hatred for female singer-songwriters in general, but this one's going to take a while, if it ever clicks.

Just a random example of her lyrics:

the cities we passed were a flickering wasteland
but his hand in my hand made them hale and harmless
while down in the lowlands the crops are all coming;
we have everything
life is thundering blissful towards death
in a stampede of his fumbling green gentleness

Garrixon, you really like the girl, don't you ? But seriously, I'll admit she's got something. I even expect her voice to become tolerable, even listenable as she ages. Oh no, wait : elves don't age...

Forget I said anything, she's hopeless.

Haha what can I say vocals are always the last thing I care about in music and I'm a hipster in denial. Lord Worm hasn't stopped me from listening to Cryptopsy, and the shrieking elf sounds that come from Joanna Newsom won't stop me from listening to her songs either.

Lord Worm and Joanna Newsom covering Nightwish's Beauty and the Beast. NOW that would be the worst thing I've ever heard.

Edit : no but seriously, she's not that bad.

Me too. That nasal resonance is horrible. She should relax when she sings. That's the secret I discovered about 2 weeks ago. It completely opens up the diaphragm. She does what I used to do. She tries to force the overtones to do the work with way too much air pressure.

Comparing her to Lord Worm is fucking stupid. He is a beast where she is annoying. Lord Worm has never annoyed me. It's dissonant but not off-putting.

+1 Lord Worm is/was one of the best death metal vocalists.

Not saying he isn't but the first time you heard him did you consider him pleasant?

Speaking of Lord Worm, is he actually involved in any musical projects, or did he just fall off the face of the earth after Cryptopsy?

Didn't he start teaching somewhere?
