I think, even now, Nirvana remains a fairly unique band. No one has replicated that sound, before or after. (I know a band can't replicate something before. You know what I mean, so shut the fuck up!) On a very basic level, they're not original, but originality is often a case of nuance, especially these days.

For instance, look at Rage Against The Machine. No way in hell are they original in a basic sense; they're a Downset clone, for the most part. What does set them apart, is Morello's guitar technique. Again, not very original overall, but that slight difference makes then recognizable, thus unique, or "original."
I see Nirvana as just bringing all of the other proto grunge bands having and just kinda running with it. I could be wrong. Melvins mainly.

Are you suggesting Nirvana sounds like Melvins?

By the way, My Sister's Machine was another solid and unknown "grunge" band.

You might own me due my lack of Melvins knowledge but from what I've heard I can hear a lot of Melvins in Bleach.

Soundgarden's "Birth Ritual" is one of the baddest songs ever written.

I really don't like grunge as a whole, but Alice in Chains always managed to get my head moving. I'm not a huge fan, but I do have a couple albums. They just had a more unique sound and I felt they had better music than I dunno, bands like Nirvana.

Alice In Chains, definitely. I wouldn't say they're one of my favs, but I like them more when compared to the other bands. Soundgarden is a close second. Nirvana and Pearl Jam are good too, but AIC and Soundgarden have better songs and I like their music more. I think Candlebox was good too. "You" is one of my favourite songs.

SA, you have to be kidding. Almost every 1992-2000 rock band has attempted to emulate Nirvana's sound. In fact, today, it's probably almost impossible to listen to Nevermind at face value, because so many bands have imitated its style that its whole novelty has worn off.

Personally, I don't really like or dislike Nirvana. They have some good songs (In Bloom, Drain You, Serve The Servents, Heart Shaped Box, etc.). And some forgettable songs (Lithium, Come As You Are, Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle, etc.). But you can't tell me Nevermind still sounds totally unique today. In fact, it's probably the most imitated rock album since Thriller.

Anyway, I voted for AIC.

I like all four of these bands, not sure which one I would pick. Taste for who I prefer changes depending on my mood.

I'd have to go with PJ and Soundgarden. I cannot say which of these 2 I like best though.
Least favorite of the four is probably AIC of which I only love Dirt.

You are right. Every post-grunge/ modern alt rock band has tried to emulate and water down the soft verse hard chorus bridge Grunge playbook for the past 20 years!

A good friend of mine, who is way more into grunge than most people, told me what "Grunge" really was.
He said that pre-Nevermind 80's grunge is the real "original" grunge and that everything after that is pop-grunge. He is right though. ex. Soundgarden's pre-Badmotorfinger releases are completly different. They sound like they threw hardcore, stoner, doom, psychedelic components into a blender. I would that this is pure metal.
Every ones emulating Nevermind but would they emulate UltraMega OK or Louder than Love. No one would! The closest band these days to the old grunge are the Melvins.

It's been said that Metal is what Priest did. Take out the rythmn and blues. Well, I think Grunge is the opposite. Add back the Blues. By doing so it reignited the conflict of what is metal and what is hard rock.

Alice In Chains, easily.

I used to like Pearl Jam, but they are very mediocre to just plain bad with the exception of a handful of songs.

Soundgarden has always sucked and Nirvana has always been worse.

AIC are my favourite by some distance. I like Soundgarden especially Badmotorfinger, PJ are good but not great and I like Nirvana's first album and there's some good songs on the other 2 but they do suffer from being overated and overplayed.
