Man Eric Dolphy will rip your ears of with a clarinet... as will Gilad Atzmon and David Krakauer to name some more. These two incorporate much middle eastern and klezmer music into their playing. Excellent stuff! Check these guys out if you haven't already T.I.E.

Anyhow... Kenny G plays the SAXOPHONE. He plays it in a hideously cheesy way, but he majors on sax none the less. And if anyone here calls that a faggy instrument I shall be forced to do this:

do you call this a SAXOPHONE ???

It is a saxophone. It's a soprano sax, so it looks a lot different than your regular alto sax.

but that must be the shittiest saxophone sound I heard ever ! Kenny G must be destroyed !

and actually, the king of Saxophones is the TENOR

Yes indeed Tenor is by far the best. But i'm sure you must be familiar Coltrane playing "my favourite things" for example? He uses a soprano there and sounds awesome. Conversely, if Kenny G played a tenor, he would still sound lame.

WiC, this is a surprisingly accurate assessment of the method used to play the saxophone. I'm impressed, even if you did it unwittingly whilst out on paTroll. :P

As for diversity in metal try these extremes: Rage Against the Machine, Rhapsody, Virgin Steele, Therion, Mercyful Fate, Astral Doors, 3 Inches of Blood, Six Feet Under, Paradise Lost, Dream Theater, Motorhead, System of a Down, Bon Jovi, Avantasia, Lordian Guard, Tarot, Marylin Manson, Thunderstone, Rotting Christ, Armored Saint, Clutch, Evergrey, Lordi, Biomechanical, Blind Guardian, Edenbridge, Time Requiem, Kamelot, etc. and tell me if they sound similar to you.

considering that they all use guitars, bass guitars, drums & vocals... yes ! they sound very similar when compared to extremes jazz can go on....

I am talking about the overall sound they produce, who cares what instruments are being used. Metal can use ANY additional instruments and sound effects without any problem.

my point is jazz using very various formations and styles (from Ragtime to freejazz !) that is far more diverse than metal acts that use always the same instruments... I know Rio made the exact same point but you failed to understand it... I hope you will now...

to sum up everything, name me 1 metal band without vocals (very easy), 1 without drums, 1 without bass guitar, 1 without guitar and finally one without any of those 4 components... can you do that with metal ? I sure can do it with Jazz !

Doesn't Apocalyptica fit all of the above ....

Sure... but is Apocalyptica a novelty band or a genuine metal act ? I'd say Option #1 but you have every right to disagree

Actually I also find Apocalyptica to be little more than a novelty. Plus, they now use a drummer, ever since they started writing their own stuff instead of just doing covers.

Favourite Jazz record at the moment: Jan Garbarek's "Madar". Saxophone, oud and tabla trio playing vaguely scandinavian sounding folk tunes over Indian rhythms and improvisation. This is one of the most restful things I've heard in a long time. :D

I need some recommendations. I'm trying to find a genre of music my g/f and I can both enjoy. So I thought, why not try jazz? I don't really care what time period they are from, but if it is some obscure artist try and post a sample. Actually a sample for any recommendation would be cool.

Try this: John Zorn - Filmworks XI, Secret Lives/Under The Wing
Don't try anything other by the dude! Yet...

EDIT: Actually that's not really jazz, but you might both like it!

I read the whole thread now, boy... WiC was an ASSHOLE!!
